Personally I would go with the Yamaha. I have a friend who started out on that and still loves it. Best bass for the price and then some I'd say. Of course, I've never played an SX, and it seems like a lot of these guys say go for that. Maybe they are even better. Have you had the chance to play any of these?

As for an amp, go to a pawn shop. You'll get a good deal. Or ebay, you should be able to find an old Peavey, I hear good things about those.

Also keep an eye on the classified here at TalkBass. I just sold a 1983 Ibanez P-Bass for well under 200 bucks that will put the SX to shame.

I think the SX bass/Rondo Music option is a GREAT one. I have played for many years, and a few months ago, played a SX Jazz Bass which played/sounded great for it's steal of a price, and also played a SX short scale Precision Bass Fretless, which was also very, very impressive for the money. Again this, coming from someone who's played for years, and who's luckily had a chance to run his fingers over many basses in that time, some costing many thousands of dollars. Are SX Basses/Rondo Music instruments perfect? No, but from the ones I've played, these instruments could potentially serve you well for many years, and not be instruments you necessarily outgrow. I would be delighted to add an SX or two to my stable of instruments to use for not only practices, but probably even gigs.

do yourself a favor and buy an sx jazz bass. better than squire in my experience and you can also get that warm p bass sound with some tweaking of the tone knobs..so its like a 2 in 1! also, sx are VERY easy to mod if you want/need to down the road.

An SX P-bass, shipped to your door with a gig bag would cost about $140.

I'd do the Ibanez GSR200, or more likely scratch up another $10 and get the GSR200FM in sunburst

Ps, there are tons of good basses for little money that are worthwhile. My "endorsement" so to speak of the SX doesn't mean that other options aren't as good, or worse. I hate to show my preference for one brand over another, in general. The SX is just one example. But it's a good example, particularly as I think for the low, low amount of money you pay, you get a pretty good bass. I guess I'm saying that I can't think of a bass for less money that is more playable that can function as a legit instrument to practice/play with. You may be able to find a new bass for less money than the SX (less than $109 or so...), but I can only imagine it would border on being a toy, and not a good purchase for it.

I agree on the Yamaha RBX. I have one of these sitting in the corner of my room. This thread made me break it out & play it. They used to be $150 for a new one. Not sure if they still are, but they are a damn good sounding and well constructed bass for a very inexpensive price. Pick up one & give it a try, I think you might be pleasantly surprised.

Yes. Get an Acoustic B20 20-Watt 1x12" Combo ($120) and an SX Jazz (or Precision) Bass for let's say $140 and there ya go, $260 for a VERY nice beginner's rig

+1 on Ibanez - They play nice, and the FM is beautiful in person. Are you getting a 4 or 5 string? - I didn't see it mentioned. Ibanez is known for smaller necks if thats what your into, but like I tell everyone - go try them out if you can.
On the amp - just start saving. Personally I'd get an amp/cab separate - you might not like a combo.

If you're in Mobile (Alabama), your local Craigslist has a used Washburn for $50 or a used Squire Jazz for $125.
