Can I use something like an Art tube preamp between my bass and my amp's instrument input to get a tube like sound?

Plug tube preamp into amp instrument in

i am not familiar with that particular pre-amp, but i have experience using the THD univalve in that manner.
the THD is a low wattage guitar amp, but is made with a dummy load on the speakers, so you can run it without a cab, and it says it is specifically made for doing just what you say, ie using the pre- section into an input on a guitar or bass amp..
my son played it at home home for practice, and it sounded great, but when he gigged with it, he got some funky noise.
we now use a Universal Audio 610 solo for that, but we run it through a Radial JD7 injector, which has Jensen Transformers and is mega-quiet
all i can say is, try it and see how much noise you have...if you're not getting much hiss or hum, i'd say go for it.

Yes you can. Also, there are about two hundred other tube preamps, in rack and pedal format, to try that way. It's a very common and popular thing. Go to the FX forum and search on "tube".
My combo has a power amp in on the back, so I run my Alembic F1-X in there. That lets me use just the tube pre, instead of both preamps in a chain. Cleaner, I think. If your amp doesn't have that, then pre into the input jack works, just mind your gains.
