Political Science Class (Rant)

If you really want to experience people who are politically and socially illiterate, read the threads that follow most of the articles on CNN.com.

In my experience, many political "discussions" are just microcosms of the political discourse in the mainstream media. I'm not inferring a causal relationship either way between media discourse and private discouses' effect on each other, but flip on the television or AM radio. You're not going to hear well-structured and well-reasoned debate. You're going to hear belligerent pundits spouting every logical fallacy in the book in an effort to defend their positions.

I gave up on talking politics to anyone once I heard my engineering boss say "I'll vote for Candidate X because I think he's going to win and I want to vote for a winner." True story. Very intelligent guy and cast his vote absed on who he thought was going to win the presidential election.

He wasn't the only one I heard talk like that, but that was the straw. I'll do my candidate research and give my family and trusted friends my opinions, but that's it. I feel sorry not just for this country, but for the world.

People as a whole are stupid.

Creative problem solving is one thing, but refusing to accept reality and substituting your own is a complete different monster.

What's a 'free speech' area? Is that some part of campus that they've allowed free speech? Like a smoking section?

Its the area where you are allowed to say whatever you want whenever. And you can rent it out. Christian extremists come and speak there a few times a year, as do Darwinists, and occasionally Mormons. The election committee comes and signs people up to vote there.

There should be a big difference between your first year political science and second year. Most of the idiots have failed.

Well that's the thing, I only need one of these classes for a degree req, the rest will be of my choosing.

Dude, it's postsecondary. 90% of the people you meet will be on the liberal side of the fence, and a portion of them will be communists, socialists, etc. It's the nature of postsecondary. Get used to it. And yes, you will hear some extremely stupid things from those people, just like you'll hear some extremely stupid things from people on the other side of the fence.

Note: I am not condoning nor endorsing any political views, I'm simply stating my observations from my time spent in university.

I don't mind the liberals, socialists, conservatives, etc. I mind the apathetic people. Why take a poly sci class if you are completely apathetic to the subject? Why not take something like basic psych or a fine art class?

Isn't the whole idea of free speech that you can say anything you want anywhere (within reason - like you can't yell 'bomb' at an airport and not expect to get tackled when you run away)? So if you're in this zone you can say whatever you want, but if you're somewhere else on campus you can only say political neutral statements?

"Free speech" only applies to the government limiting your speech.

When you start talking about private individuals limiting speech on private property - we're not talking about "free speech" issues anymore.

I do see your point, but on my campus (UCI) back in the day, there were kooks spouting off stuff all the time in all sorts of locations. If it was in class, understandably they were escorted out, but for the most part they were allowed to start up where ever they wanted. It seems funny to me that they've zoned this stuff to only be in one specific location on campus. That's all.

Yeah, its like a mini concrete amphitheater with a podium and tables. Its where the job fairs and all that stuff is, but on campus its just known as the free speech area.

...and UCI is a public university, on public property - but quite a lot of universities aren't.

It seems funny to me that they've zoned this stuff to only be in one specific location on campus. That's all.

i sincerely hope the last doctor i saw will refrain from breeding,but we do have a local appeals court judge here embroiled in a nasty scandal....seems her lawyer hubby took some bondage pix of her that he hoped to shop on an web site,and the guy that answered the ad is now suing for 67 million because he feels that he was being coerced.....

I dont see a reason for the Judge to step down. As far as I know Judges have every right to partake in kinky photo shoots, as much as anyone else does.

Ha, I've had liberals who thought I was liberal and liberals who thought I was conservative.

It's gotten to the point where I don't think people even know what the heck they are talking about at all even more. I'd even go so far as to say that there are plenty of people out there who claim to be liberal who are really conservative, and plenty of self-claimed conservatives who really are liberal. They just don't know it because they've remained ignorant to what those words really mean and imply.
