In my experience, many political "discussions" are just microcosms of the political discourse in the mainstream media. I'm not inferring a causal relationship either way between media discourse and private discouses' effect on each other, but flip on the television or AM radio. You're not going to hear well-structured and well-reasoned debate. You're going to hear belligerent pundits spouting every logical fallacy in the book in an effort to defend their positions.
