Political Science Class (Rant)

I can't believe I looked through the posts, and there was no real mention of population control, what gives?

Just so you know, strategiery has made it's way into the English lexicon now.
Right! It seems as if it is getting easier and easier for people to get dumber. No matter how many facts and evidence you put in front of alot of people, they stick to their dumbness and even seem to be proud of it! I hate to harken back to those thrilling days of yesteryear, but it seems that people in the 60's were alot smarter and better informed than today!
As it always seems. The older generation in the 60s said the same thing when you were young. Its not that people are getting dumber, its just that there are a lot more people, so of course there will be a lot more dumb people. A lot more smart people too.
Good. Being apathetic is a great way to foster intellectual laziness.

Because we are required to in Texas.
Required? You don't have an option to take a different class to fulfill the requirement? I know in Ca a lot of people take Poly Sci, but its not required, there are a few other classes one can take instead.
We have to take POLS 206 and 207. State & Local Gov't, then Nat'l Gov't. Both are worthless.
At the risk of sounding too optimistic, I'm not sure there are THAT many morons roaming the planet. I think the entire "I'm surrounded by stupidity" feeling is a false sense of security people use to (consciously or unconsciously) bolster their own position or self image. It's easy to assume that someone who disagrees with your (not you, Matticus) position on Topic X does so because they are uninformed or too stupid to "get it" and that very sentiment permeates OT very frequently but, c'mon, really?
Add to that the fact that we rarely engage the general public in any meaningful way to the point where one is capable of making a realistic judgment on another's intelligence. Going further, many times people gauge entire groups of people based on blurbs they see on the news. Not very intelligent, oddly. Neither is making the assumption of intelligence because someone doesn't repeatedly mispronounce a word. Great call. I'd hope there would be more to it than that.
My point? I don't believe people in general are a dumb as they can be portrayed, nor do I believe that you, dear reader, are as intelligent as you believe. Sleep tight, idiots.

Are you required to take a course on Government and a course on Economics in High School? Just curious as to whether that has anything to do with it.
Like I said mike, there are a lot more smart people as well.
Its also a senior year requirement over here, I was just wondering. Im sure there are some Majors which require one take PolySci.

I enjoy the class as a whole, but its extremely discussion based, and these discussions seem to be brought up every day, whether we are talking about interest groups, parties, the Constitution, etc.
The apathetic ones are the ones that really get me though. The whole "Why does X or Y really matter to me?"

Well, where I go it isn't required. You can fill your arts/humanities/social sciences however you want to.
Well... brain size has been shrinking for quite a number of years - about 30,000 or so... and there is a good bit of evidence that IQ is tracking with that.
i recall tho' that much more time was spent back then on people talking and exchanging ideas.....without it turning into a shouting match.....i think that sat/cable,video games,i poods etc have detached so many people from the world that they don't know how to discuss anything with each other,and instead rely on tv talking heads like limbaugh and beck to form their opinions for them
Unfortunately, I don't have the inclination or patience to completely flesh this discussion out, but you and I both know that there are enough holes in the statement above that I shouldn't need to.

I learned a lot from taking a few journalism classes in college. I learned that one of their jobs is to infuse news stories with an opinion or point of view ("Every story has to have an angle!") I also learned that people become journalists not because they want to report the news of the day - they want to affect change in society according to their own particular ideology. Something else I learned is it doesn't require a particularly smart or intelligent person to be a journalist.
BTW, Limbaugh and Beck are both on the radio, not on TV.
But, you knew that.
