Quilted, Flamed, Spalted...eh, it's all good. Although personally I would never obscure a beautiful figured wood top by painting a sunburst finish over it! But all of the basses in this thread are pretty hot looking, so it seems hard to go wrong.
 
Of those choices I will pick spalted but I like burl maple better :)

I agree. These things come and go in popularity. When I bought my Alembic, flamed maple was "in". And that's what I got. It looks great no question, but then the next bass the store got in was burl and I REALLY wished I'd ordered that instead. Especially since flame popularity has fallen, first with quilted rising and now spalted seems to be hot item. I presume this explains the votes. But I'd jump over it all with burl!
 
Of the three, spalt gets my vote too. But here's a side-thought - does it have to be maple? I had a flamed myrtle 5 that was gorgeous. Off-the-hook 3D. I still dream about it.
