Poll: Fender Jazz or P-bass

There's no "right or wrong" to this of course.

Go try a passel of Ps and Js and figure out which one is the best fit for you.

Personally, I have owned some nice Jazzes and certainly dig a good J, but I'm a die-hard P man at base.

I own a Fender P but if I had to do it all over again, I would have bought the Fender jazz. Back in the day all my icons used a Fender P. Sid Vicious, Paul Simonon, Dee dee Ramone, and of course JJ Burnell, so I "had to" own a P bass.

If I had the common sense I have now, I would have owned a Jazz. I feel it is more well rounded and a better neck. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the P and popularity indicates that it's an excellent bass, it's up to personal choice and the person playing it.

I love P basses. But, I must say, I had a Jazz Bass a while ago that had me second guessing my allegiance to the P. So, while you are gonna get alot of "I like this" type answers, only you know what you like. Play them both, many different samples, and then you and you alone will know for sure. Enjoy the journey.

J Bass : nice narrow neck , versatile sound , good looks

I also have both. Really like both. Like them enough that whenever I am tempted to get another bass I remind myself how much I like the basses I have.

It's so annoying how obviously clueless people run down Precisions. Please don't even bother replying if you have no idea what you are talking about. I have both P & J and love them both. They both have their plus and minuses, BUT, in my opinion, the Precision is much more versatile. I can't play Teen Town on my P Bass but can play it flawlessly on my J Bass. If you think P Basses are so hollow and empty and one dimensional you don't know how to adjust you amp and bass.

Get a Fender Jazz. More tone variations. Better in a band setting. Great for slap bass. Thinner (faster) neck... It just doesn't get any better. P-Bass's are the kings of BORING... Get a 70's (1977) Fender if possible. That sound is the best. Get a remake if you cant afford the real thing. The 75' reissue or the Marcus Miller Signature Bass are the best 70's remakes I can think of. (ESPECIALLY THE MARCUS MILLER!!!!)

Other people telling you which they like isn't going to help you any. Just go play a bunch. I love Ps. I like the sound of other people playing Js but I never felt right playing one. You may find something similar and there's only one way to find out.

P body, J neck, P/J pups. Not a P, not a J...it's just right.
