I voted "Blocks" as I'm a sucker for Blocks & Binding on Fender-styled instruments, but there's definitely something awesome about custom inlays.

i don't really care what shape inlays are, although i'd prefer dots, blocks, triangles to vines or other esoteric shapes. there's no "i'm not picky" option on the poll - also there's no carrot inlay option!

I owned a Squier VM Jazz for a short while. The black block/maple look was incredibly attractive to me. Interestingly enough, I have come to dislike them. Too flashy for my liking. Subtlety is my new thing!

But seriously, those... and dots and blocks. I agree vines and weird stuff are just meh to me.

Dots are my preference, but blocks are also fine.

I don't look at my fretboard at all... and even only glance at the top-side dots every once in awhile, so I don't really mind what's on the front, but I like the clean look of nothing there (especially on my fretlesses).

Since I have two basses with block inlays (one rosewood, one maple) and two guitars with blocks (LP Custom and Agile 3100), I'm guessing I like blocks. The only one that has blocks deliberately is my parts-built Jazz. I dig the black blocks on maple. The rest are just happenstance... But I like 'em (especially the Agile with the real MOP inlays).

I tend to like the look of larger inlays, but not particularly fancy ones with a lot of different materials. I'd prefer a blank fretboard over dots. I always thought the ironbird limited was cool.

I have read that one of Vinny Foderas first jobs in bass building was cutting these inlays for Stuart Spector

As a rule, I prefer dots, but blocks look fabulous on certain Jazz basses.
