Any and every device that harmonises will have some kind of lag or delay. It takes time for any kind of tracking to resolve a note or key. Tracking that detects the lowest note (monophonic tracking) is way faster than polyphonic tracking. There is no way around this…it is what it is. This processing lag creates a delay between the dry input signal and the harmonised output signal. In fact, this delay screams at us. Some devices like the H9 hide this delay as deliberate and create delayed harmonies. So the harmonies repeat on the beats of a delay. Kill the delay times and you find there’s always a tracking delay that you can’t dial out. If you dial out the dry signal, and use a synthesised root note, then your root and harmonised notes have the same lag. There’s no delay, just a very workable lag. I use this trick with the Hog2, use only the wet signal and dial out the dry. Get used to the slight lag and with careful timing, it sounds like there is no lag. It also tracks anything I throw at it, however if you don’t like the hog2’s synthesised tone, you can’t dial in the original dry as it will highlight the delay again. What would be cool is a device that samples the input, does it’s tracking and processing, then blends the two in the same delay time. So both are lagged by the same amount and appear to have no delay.
