Seriously? I got this email yesterday- it's got to be a joke, right? "Oh no, people are dumping human poop into the ocean!" Seriously? Am I missing something? Last time I checked, crap was biodegradable, and the ocean wasn't a perfectly sterile place to begin with. So these eople are freaking out like it's some cause celebre, but people pooped wherever for millenia- and the world didn't end. So am I missing something, or is this really really stupid?

I'm no greenie, but we need to be more responsible than to continue to contaminate the environments of other species.
It's a long, uphill battle, but we can start by applying some common sense.

it's that they want $1 from everyone, and claim that that will end it. i just can't get on board with that kind of fund raising. the money, though probably going to be accumulated, will not likely (imo) end any such natural dump.

The volume of humanity on the earth no longer allows this to happen without significant pollution. There is no excuse for freely dumping the volume of sewage that a passenger liner with thousands of people on it generates.

Trains used to dump sewage on the tracks under the train. Does the OP like that idea? We have a lot fewer passenger trains then we used to, but we have a lot more people living near tracks.

At the point where the volume of pollution exceeds the Earth's capacity to process it, we die.

Am I the one being stupid? I must be, because the idea of "doing the math" hadn't occurred to me. Please explain.

Fair enough. I understand that it could choke out ecosystems etc if there's chemicals in it, but I figure that the poop itself is fairly easily dispersed, and in the grand scheme of things, maybe there's bigger fish to fry (no pun intended). I'd actually like to see an analysis of the environmental impact, because though I'm not denying that it has some immediate effect, dumping the stuff is probably a whole lot less harmful than dumping plastic bags and other non-degradable refuse. All pollution is not created equal.

If it's an issue, fine. It's something to work on. It is not the end of the world, and donating a buck to Johnny Do-Good isn't going to save the planet. There's a whole lot of ways to do right that don't involve funding some lobby's internet servers.

Atrocities like this cause me to think that sooner or later nature/Earth/God/cosmos/whatever is going to just wipe humans out of the picture and start repairing the damage once we're out of the way.

And to keep on-topic, maybe the cruise liners should be saving all that poop to fertilize the expensive non-essential crops that California is using 80% of its water to grow.

There are probably chemicals and other non-biodegradeable waste in the sewage dumps. Baby wipes, tampons, condoms, and lost engagement rings.

I'm just glad it's all in one place. Thanks Mom for corralling it all there instead of leaving it scattered everywhere. It's not hurting me a bit and I never plan to visit Hawaii or go anywhere near it so...

As far as "one day we will pay for our sins" well, yeah, let's deal with that one day, just like we always do and always have done, but in the meantime... who wants a beer?

We do some terrible things to our oceans. Dumping excrement into them is not one of the terrible things.
