Poor Routing - Fix Help?

Anybody ever routed a pickup cavity too large? If so, how did you "fix" it, or fill it a bit to make it unnoticable?

The bass is a POS Squier and is going to be a solid color, so I'm not worried about how the wood looks, but I want the route cavities to look nice.

Simple solution would be hide it with a pickguard

Or you could cut a piece of wood in the shape of your over-sized, make it match nicely, glue it in and try again?

How much bigger did you route it?

I had this problem years ago after a friend decided he wanted to use some pickups he'd bought after commissioning me to install other ones. The routes were larger than the new pickups. After we scratched our heads a bit, I lined the walls of the pickup cavity with a thin birch veneer. When it was done, it looked like it had been planned that way...

About 3/16". I was thinking about filling it with other wood, but figured I'd get some opinions on it first.
