Jerry Jones, and for look go Dolphin nose. You can get everything from the vintage to modern tones out of it and it looks retro. If you really want, Jerry will substitute the Dano style headstock for the dolphin one.

Otherwise I would try the Italia or DiPinto basses. Hollow bodies that can also give you modern sound.

If you really want the Dirnt tone, try finding a Kramer DMZ4000 or any of the early Kramer lumies. The Kramer was what Dirnt used on the first two albums. And they look retro cool.

I think mike played a gibson grabber back in the dookie album.. at least that's whats on the basket case video. But, then I also rember how he owned a 60s p bass that he played/recorded with?

He had and recorded with a G3 before switching the P basses. The G3 would definitely be a good choice, if you're looking for a very forward-mid heavy-low light-tone. Especially if you use a pick. That's probably my only complaint with mine. I love the way it plays, but in some situations it's almost lacking. It cuts through a mix like nothing else and sounds phenomenal when overdriven, but doesn't have that depth that you'd get from say a P-bass.
