Double Bass pops rosin paper cup

Do most of you that use pops rosin leave it in the paper cup or put it in something else?

There were a couple years there where I'd remove it from the paper cup and then wrap it in a cutout circle of grocery store plastic bag, but then I realized it's far better to just remove the paper and leave it in the plastic container bare. Sometimes you may need to tap the bottom of the container to get it out, but I've found it keeps better this way.

Except I left my pops at an opera rehearsal and I don't think I'm ever getting it back, so I'm about to toss up 20 bucks to try a cake of that fancy Oak stuff.

Funny you mention this. recently I had to switch back to Pops, the Carlson's doesn't like the dry heat of CA. I hadn't used it for years, but the contrast of Pop's dixie cup to Carlson's Swedish steel (aluminum?) had me contemplating the aesthetic choices of the US vs. the rest of the world in general. Pops looks kinda like a cheap, coagulated BBQ sauce really.

the only thing about unwrapping Pop's and leaving it in the container bare is you have to be careful about where you touch the rosin. my teacher highly suggests keeping the paper on to maximize the cleanliness of the rosin. as it gets dirtier and oilier the rosin becomes less and less effective. although, that paper does get VERY annoying doesn't it?

I don't use Pop's but if I did, I would do the same thing I do with my oak rosin. Keep it in a little leather pouch, That way you don't touch it at all.

I wrap aluminum foil around mine so that it doesn't get stuck in the container and so I don't have to touch it/gum up my left hand.

When I first started I removed the cup and wrapped the outside with a little bit of toilet paper. That was kind of stupid. I was constantly cleaning loose, dusty toilet paper from it, instead of a stiff, easily removable paper cup.

Just chop a quarter inch or so off with a razor then it sits in the canister just fine.

I ordered some oak rosin (along with one of the little leather pouches he sells) and it came in last night, and I've been trying to figure out the best way to store the stuff. From what I can gather, the only way to get the rosin out of the container is to split the container at the seams. I'd just toss it straight in the leather but I bought 3 cakes and I, for the life of me, can't figure out how to keep the containers intact and still use the stuff.

You need to peel off one side. I would also write soft, medium, or hard on the bottom so if you loose the lid, you can easily identify which it is.

I ordered some oak rosin (along with one of the little leather pouches he sells) and it came in last night, and I've been trying to figure out the best way to store the stuff. From what I can gather, the only way to get the rosin out of the container is to split the container at the seams. I'd just toss it straight in the leather but I bought 3 cakes and I, for the life of me, can't figure out how to keep the containers intact and still use the stuff.

I use a hobby knife to remove a little bit of the container all the way around the top. You can always cut off more as needed.

I don't like the paper cup. I get rid of it and put my Pops in one of the pushup-type cups that one of the lower-quality rosins came in (e.g., Kolstein, Super Sensitive).

yes, I had this problem someday. I had peeled off the paper, and my rosin became oily because of my fingers . It's like to touch the bow hair...

Just recently some dude at a gig convinced me to try his Pop's and it kind of felt good, so I ordered a cake. What a let down. After three days I am ready to throw it in the river. This stuff is NOT what it used to be.

I think a brand new cake of pops is usually a little harder than what it becomes after a few weeks. Have you tried the old "rosin in a zip lock bag w/ a few drops of water" trick? If you still want to throw it in the river, let me know if you'd like that river to be the Hudson so I can take care of it for you.

I leave mine in the cup. My last (and first) cake of Pop's was pretty dry and cracked easily, but my current cake is softer and it seems to be more moist...what do you guys prefer your cakes to be like?
