Popular basses you hate??

That note about reclaiming the low end and such was hilarious, I did actually LOL!!! :p

I hate the way the bridges look on LAKLANDS. I want to like the basses, everyone has such great things to say about them, I just think the bridge is ugly as hell, looks way out dated to me. IMHO....... :hiding:

This is how we've evolved - We shave the rough edges off everything and everybody for fear of offending someone.

Well, everyone will certainly have their own take on it. I have plenty of rough edges left and I'm sure I've offended my fair share of people (especially during my 20+ years in the US Navy) but I fail to see the use in "Basses You Hate".

I seem to recall John Turner saying something like, "If you're going to call it ugly or say you hate it, you better own it." Something like that, anyway.

"I hate Gibsons. They suck."

"I hate Reverends. They're weird."

"I hate Laklands. They're just overpriced copies."

And so on. I find no real useful information in such things. Tell me why you love, say, Warrior basses or a Wal or something I don't have and I'll read along and enjoy it. But if all it comes down to is, "Tbirds have neck dive" or "Bongos are ugly" or "Fenders are for old guys", then please, explain what anyone gains from this tired old teenage crapola.

But then I'm not 17 anymore. I don't think "u" is a pronoun and I don't save much time by typing "sux".

But that's just me, I suppose.

That bass - Heinz The Wonder Bass - has for years been the subject of ridicule and hate. Even the owner of EBMM once said to me, "That's the ugliest finish we've ever done."

Then he laughed. He knows I love that thing.

But you know, we're not effin' keyboard players or lead singers. We're bassists. There's supposed to be a bit more of a brotherhood here. When I pick up someone else's bass, whether I secretly love it or hate it, I find something nice to say about it.

Know why? Because it belongs to another bassist and he/she clearly found something good about it.

It doesn't cost me much to find something good about it, too.

But again, that's maybe just me.

Jack

PS: Regarding Heinz: At least it's not a hair-band purple Sterling with single coils!

I hate the following basses:

Spector NS-2J, Spector Legend 5, Fender Jazz Bass (MIM), Fender Precision (MIJ)

(Just kidding :))

My problem is I like too many basses. I thought I hated Corts then I tried a GB94 and I can't get it out of my mind.

Warwicks sound good to me but I don't like their club-like necks.

I won't even pick up one of those basses with the big gaudy chrome flame-shaped bridge plates. I don't even know who makes them.

I also hate any Dingwall bass that I cannot possess. :bawl:

Getting this in before closing...

I'm not into hating much, especially basses. However, I'm not much of a fan of Fender P basses simply because the tone that's in my head of what I want my tone to sound like is the opposite of the P bass tone. IMO of course. I can play one coupled with a single coil pickup and an active preamp though. I like the slap tone on a nice active PJ.:bassist:

The "Heinz" I like quiet a lot.

The purple one, I would kill for!:)

Heinz is "My Bass", if you know what I mean. I've sold it twice and it's come back both times. I think I have to face it. It's my bass, and I am its owner.

The purple one is the original Sterling prototype. Ah, the 80s.

I HATE FENDER P-BASSES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that's good stuff, right there. The bass by which all modern electric basses are measured. Yeah, I can see hating them.

I'm not trying to derail this thread, even though someone will eventually, but what's up with those Traben bridges? Is it just for looks or is there some kind of high-mass bridge theory coming into play?

1 simple answer is all I need and then the thread can continue.:D
Yeah, higher mass, more resonance, more body to bridge contact, etc, yadda yadda yadda...............

I will tell you one huge advantage, the weight, no neckdive!

Like a Badass bridge on steroids, dose it make a difference, I haven't a clue, I love how they look, feel and sound, I ain't gonna question it!:D

This is how we've evolved - We shave the rough edges off everything and everybody for fear of offending someone. We're talking about musical instruments here, for crying out loud! I can't even count the number of times Fender players would make fun of my Thunderbird. If you REALLY love the instrument (or the car, or the baseball team, or the girl/guy) you toughen up and endure the agony, because it really doesn't matter anyway. OTOH, if you are enamored of something simply because other people will approve, you will probably adopt the fetal position in relatively short order.

Man, I HATE having to climb up on the soapbox...

Well spoke! All of you guys complaining about this topic either need to man up and seriously think about why you like the instrument someone else doesn't like or grow some thicker skin and deal with people that have different opinions than you.

Crap, I knew kids in music school that would make fun of an Ibanez like my SR640 all day, but who cares? If you like the way it sounds, what does it matter?!? Screw 'em!
