Now some believe extra magnetic pull will change the tone, but IMHO, thats BS.

There are MANY threads on this forum in which people have argued about it.
You need to start searching up the P versus PJ threads.

Same here. I mainly use the PJ setting at home and soloing, but use the P almost exclusively when playing live. The J pickup soloed on this bass just doesn't do much for me which is strange because I usually like the bridge pickup soloed on most jazz basses.
Yeah the single J is too thin by itself, maybe if it was a humbucker like the Am deluxe or MM style pup soloing it would be more of an option for me.
I just finished up my version of a Tony Franklin tribute. I had a tasty Fender American Standard Precision Factory Prototype as a starting point and traded for a buffed out Highway 1 P bass body (THANKS Joinercape), added a BA II, Ultralites & Drop Tuner, some old domed Tele knobs, ordered Fralin pups (+10% on the J) VOL VOL, shielded body cavity. I use my Bassbone as an outboard tone control.

Fine work! Now all you need is the 3-way Tele switch!
I thought long and hard about that, and onboard tone control. In the end it had to my vision of what works for me and the way I play. I rarely mess with my basic tone once setup. I can control the dynamics and tone by where I play and through my touch. So, this is what I got.
BTW, never had a drop tuner before. It hasn't screwed me up a bit, even playing with my Jazz group. GO FIGURE!
