Post Count?

Here's a question?

If a thread is moved from another subforum to Off Topic, do the posts already in it get deducted from each member that posted before the move?
Or the other way around: from OT to another subforum.

Or would that bring a fiery demise?

I can't imagine that there is much maintenance or bandwidth involved in letting post counts just run, or turning them off completely. However, the new policy not only requires more maintenance, it creates weird rules and policy around situations like this one you mention here Rene. Again, this not only seems like extra work to me, but seems to me like it's mean in spirit, and creates a value tier around a user's worth beyond the money they may or may not contribute to this site.

Yeah it's definitely an automatic thing that comes as part of the software - I've seen many other forums like this and postcounts are prominent and just a "fun" thing - but also helps the admin see how busy the site is and what parts are most popular etc. etc.

I also think the idea is to encourage loyalty and people to keep coming back, as they build up "credit" - rather than starting at zero every time on a new forum...?

Whether or not we have post counts or not doesn't bother me, but there are a couple of unspoken notions here that I don't particularly like. The first is that all the threads, posts, and tbrs that hang out here in OT are not as worthy as the song UNO threads, the 'recommend me a pedal', and what do you think about '(insert brand name) strings?' threads. The other vibe I'm getting here is that those that tend to haunt those threads and other forums are somehow more valued members than those who lurk in OT. TB is a great site, but to create a policy that implies that a whole forum, and all its posts is worthless (or rather what you say doesn't 'count') seems to be pithy and divisive at best. Like I said before, I really don't care about post count, even though I have one of the higher ones here, but I'd like to go down on record that to me OT, is the core of this site, and I feel a kind of brotherly (and sisterly) bond with the regulars here. While my first instinct is to shrug my shoulder and say 'so what?', I can't seem to shake the idea that this gesture is kind of mean spirited unless it's levied site wide. My two cents. :)

off topic is non-music discussion. this site is a bass (and therefore music-related) discussion site. this is the reason the folks in charge do not consider the OT sub forum on par with, say, basses, or misc. of course the other subforums have yakity-yak threads, but they are still, ostensibly, musically related, or they'd be here (OT).

coupled with the fact that OT also requires the most moderation of any subforum here, there have been movements among the mods in the past to do away with OT altogether. that's not going to happen, though, as long as i'm here - OT is very necessary to the site, to give folks the opportunity to discuss non-music stuff with their peers.

once a post has been registered in a member's count, it's counted. paul would have to do a complete forum-wide post recount to catch this change in the existing post-count list.

posting a new post in off topic forum now does not add to your post count. that's the extent of the change - the old postcounts are unchanged, except when a post is deleted.

the point is to discourage post count padding threads, which, despite the stated fact that 'nobody cares about post count', certainly seems to be annoying quite a few folks.

You 20,000 posts don't make your feet smell like french toast. This is exactly the type of inane diatribe Admin's new policy is aimed at. You feet smell just like mine do. The floor of a jailhouse shower-room.

Seriously, I have women from all walks of life smell my shoes ... from cleaning ladies to brides at weddings (and their bridesmaids). Even my former business partner (a woman) smelled them. When I ask them how they smell, they respond in one of two ways. Either "They smell like new shoes," or "They smell like French toast." I swear to god this is true.

Why not just eliminate post counts altogether? There really is no legitimate reason to have them in the first place except just for fun (and it seems like they're not just for fun if posts in such and such a sub-forum no longer count). People shouldn't weigh the validity of the posts of others based on post count (and it seems they don't here, mainly because post counts aren't as easily visable).

Furthermore, there still is post count padding in other sub-forums. In the Basses section, there're countless posts just saying "nice bass" and "+1" and other things along those lines. If the intention is to eliminate post-count padding, it would seem far more beneficial to simply eliminate post counts altogether.

Also, intentional or not, there is somewhat of a social hierarchy (illusory or otherwise) created by post counts in such and such a sub-forum, but not others. Regardless of the clearly good intentions, there is still the implication (although I'm sure unintentional) that those who frequent off-topic are in a sense sub-class posters compared to those who don't.

My personal view of this site (perhaps this is incorrect, or at least out of alignment with the intention of the site) is that Talkbass is not just a place for discussion about Bass (although that is undoubtedly part of it), but a place to have discussions with people like us- people who play bass, thus making Off-Topic and all other sub-forums equally "legitimate" and aligned with the intention of the site.

For the sake of clarification, I'm not making this post out of being "butthurt" (lacking a better word) because I'm a frequenter of OT- otherwise I wouldn't advocate eliminating the post count altogether. It just seems as though a far more effective way to accomplish the goals of the administration while causing fewer negative after-affects would be to eliminate post counts altogether.

^^^ Dude, really well written. Are you a professional writer??^^^

Maybe the program could be modified to list post counts for all the categories in talk bass. That way people can see who is posting where. This would be very interesting data.

Bottom line is, threads use up storage and bandwidth. This translates into $$$. Paul is trying to reduce the fluff to keep costs down. A reasonable effort. Not to mention the additional maintenance effort needed by mods to police these useless threads. :eyebrow:
