Southern Rock bands in the 70s definitely had an interesting take on "funk" ...I agree that the Skynyrd example, or this one (below) hardly compare to the best of the genuine FUNK in this thread, but it still has a wonderfully visceral if oblique connection to the Booty Button in our brains.

Tim Hutton (the singer/composer) would likely be honoured with that kind of statement. I know he was really into Prince at that time.
This is a lesser known/lesser appreciated Parliament jam, but I've always loved it. I also think the P-Funk horns should be mentioned more often when the greatest funky horn sections are discussed.
