I'm sure I've told this story before, but I was playing in a Tex Mex band in the 90s and the leader added Achy Breaky heart to the set list. We played it at a mixed wedding, and it was the one song that brought both sides of the aisle to the floor en masse. I was shocked how many people knew all the moves.

Fager's was my jam for a couple of years; the band I was in played two-week stints there alternating with another band throughout the summer, so it was basically our band for two weeks, other band for two weeks, and then we'd be back again for two weeks. Cool. They rotate quite a bit more now. The indoor bar stage has the same band Friday and Saturday nights and other than that, it's different every day with some being DJs. We're getting 3 or 4 bookings per summer and I suppose some might be a little more or a little less on the rotation.

By the mid-late 80s, I completely dropped out of music and stayed out for 24 years.

OC draws from Maryland, Virgina, Deleware and eastern PA. What was your home base?

I was born in Baltimore, went to school in Annapolis, and moved to the DC area when I was 19 to pursue music there. Played the regional circuit out of DC for a decade and then moved to Philadelphia where I also dropped out of music for a good chunk of time.

Interesting. I'm in between Baltimore and DC, tending toward Baltimore as far as my movements. Thinking back to that time, the main reason I'd go into DC was to see Root Boy Slim. I know and am acquainted with some folks that were probably active in DC then. I'll have to come up with some names to throw at you...there's so many people out there doing it that it makes it unlikely, but then there's always those things that make you say "Wow! Small world!"

"Just What I Needed" is a sleeper. I kind of balked when my last band brought it up, but agreed to give it a try. It killed every single time. Filled the dance floor every time.

Another not-so-obvious one is Hewey Lewis "Power of Love" (from Back to the Future). Nobody hates that song it seems.

A crazy outlier that somehow gets it done in Thin Lizzy "Cowboy Song". Once you start the depressing intro you'll get some sideways looks. But as soon as it kicks in I've never seen am audience that didn't respond.

We just added it to the setlist. Happy 80's music. People who grew up with finished raising their kids are going out again. Makes them feel young. We target our setlist for people in their early 20's and 40+ for this reason. The dead ages are the "small kids at home" demographic.

Root Boy Slim was awesome. I’ve had the privilege of doing a few gigs with Torro Gamble.
