I just happened to meet people who were based in DC and that was the first working band I ended up playing in. From there I connected with other people in the area. I remember Root Boy but never had the chance to see him live; one of the problems I had was that we worked so much I didn't ever have weekends free to go and see bands. I never got to see Danny Gatton play until I was done with all that and he came to a small club outside of Philadelphia; that was not long before he died.

Never saw Danny Gatton. Root Boy Slim was entertaining. Super tight band with his weirdness and controlled (barely) chaos sprinkled on top. Plus, DC was on the agenda for my group because we missed the drinking age change in Maryland and DC stayed at 18 for some years more haha. It was only 3 years, but it was a thing.
Just a quick handful of people off the top of my head (I'm sure I'm not thinking of more than I am thinking of) who were pretty active then. I knew them then and/or know in their latest go-round some out of music and some doing solo acoustic. I could be mixing up Baltimore and Washington scenes and these might be total genre misses, but as a "you never know" experiment...Yvonne Charbonneau, Robert Fiester, Dave Messenger, Angie Miller, Any of the Stranka siblings, Robb Foster, Ben Gaither, Rod Sebastian, George Bullock, Andy Schmieder, Tim Kestrel, Bill Hicox, Andy Colvin, Tommy and Paul Micheel?
I was at a First Thursday in Austin and the 20's girls went crazy when this came on. Like a resurgence after pandemic song!

Some familiar names, but nobody I really knew in any sense of the word. There were a lot of people doing music back in the day; I wasn't involved in any of the original music scenes and mostly did cover bands that were playing what was at the time fairly current music; some of the album-oriented rock that you'd hear on WHFS and DC 101 and some R&B lightly tossed in. But as I said, I was busy, busy, busy and rarely got out to see other players. There were some good players in town back then, though, some folks who went on to some pretty serious things, like Mary Chapin Carpenter and a lot of the people she was involved with.
Very cool. He had very good players for the most part. My only alum playing run in was Deanna Bogart. She's a friend of a guitarist I play with and was in town and sat in on a low key gig. I didn't know too much about her and the Root Boy Slim connection came up in conversation. She had stories. I recall I ended up walking her to her car just to keep hearing more. I had no idea Paul Reed Smith was in Root Boy's band...not something that's highlighted anywhere

Hah, I almost forgot about this. When I was 19 I was playing clubs in Maryland, DC, Virginia, Delaware and Pennsylvania. What I was technically allowed to drink was different everywhere, some places I wasn't really even supposed be in there at all but nobody ever asked me how old I was.
Some places I could drink beer and wine but not liquor, some places I could drink anything and some places nothing. I didn't care, I always drank scotch and they always gave it to me.
Later on I switched to vodka and I didn't really start drinking wine until I came to California. Beer goes right through me so no way I could drink that and make it through a set.
Well there was a one in a how-ever-many-players-there-were chance, that you played with someone there, but swing and a miss haha
Being originally from Maryland, this is bringing back some good memories! Grew up in Howard county, remember as kid when Columbia was still just a plan for a planned community and it was still all farmland!
