What a wonderful theme for a tattoo! Well executed too.
Our one year old son is truly a wild thing. She wanted to get this tattoo for him. When she went to our tattoo guy, I had no idea how he was going to do it. As usual, he always comes up with something. He is truly talented. I can't wait for it to be finished.

In other news, I'm starting to gear up for my first tattoo. By which I mean, the time has finally come when I'm able to get one. I just need to get the design done. From your (second person plural) experiences, if you take a concept in to an artist, how good are they are making that into a drawing? Or do you need to have something pre-drawn already?

How long's a piece of string?
Depends on the artist. Look around for one that suits your style first (and is quality), then go in with the idea and see what they say.
It all depends on the artists. Much like bass players, some are more inclined to create original bassline while others are happy doing covers.
Talk to the artist and ask for original designs. Is he/she into it? Is there enthusiasm? Some are more creative than others.
I look for the total artist. I have found someone who takes verbal notes, then draws draws draws.
If your artist wants a rough sketch fine, if he can draw from scratch fine, so long as you like the drawing.
Cool. Thanks, guys! There's really only one shop I trust around here to do proper work, but they do an outstanding job, so I'm not too concerned on that factor. I've got a couple of talented artist friends, so I'll probably bother them first to see if they can do it.
Also don't be afraid to travel to find the right artist if there isn't anyone you're 100% with. I know of a couple really good guys in Van city, and would (am) take them over the artists in Calgary any day. It's there for life, might as well make it as best it can be.
I also flew half up the Australian coast for my side piece.. Which is how I ended up in Canada
Get your mates to draw it up though and see what happens from there.
Got the Phoenix done about a year ago, and the Turtle was done Yesterday
I really like the turtle, wonderful majestic creatures they are.
Memorial tat I got yesterday. I like old style but better colors. I was worried that unless it was black/white a sparrow would be too girlie but I promised my grampa I'd get one and I think the artist pulled it off well.
