mids are your friends.
they help you be present in a band mix, to cut through, even, and help to define your tone.
please don't scoop them.
for the record, what sounds good in your bedroom by yourself almost never sounds good in a band mix.

btw... 5150? as in Van Halen? good stuff, but it makes me wonder if you just switched over from guitar. if so, welcome! you've much to learn and there's many here who'd be happy to teach you! :)

I see you've gone to ThebigO school of pedal board building. I'm assuming the long piece if for a wah, volume or expression pedal.

The 2 pieces of paper on the bottom will either be an OD or the Noisebox and maybe a modded RC-2. We'll have to see how much I can actually fit once I get everything wired up...;)

When I bought it, I went into the store with the intentions of buying a Bad Monkey.
They didn't have one, so I tried out every overdrive/distortion in stock and picked this one until i can replace it with either a Monkey or something else. The best thing I played was a Swell B-Drive, but it was out of last week's price range.

Black and Green Labels = Japanese made. Production moved to Taiwan in 1990, so it is likely MIJ

EDIT: BAH,...Gnasher,...were the one who showed me the bossarea page (actually I think it was a guy from Belgium)?

TL5,...Yeah I didn't think very highly of the ToneDriver, but I got for around 30 bucks (paid too much for it), and needed a dirt pedal to replace a Sansamp PBDDI that I traded for a delay. The Bad Monkey is somewhat well regarded 'round here. There is a humphrey's audio mod that makes it more bass friendly, although I cannot comment on whether or not it's any good.

There's no way that it's Taiwanese if production didn't move there until 90. The pedal was in a box, not being used in 1990. At that time I was big into rack mounted multi-effects. The question for me is it black label or green. If it changed in 84.. my recollection is I bought it 83 but it COULD have been 84.. I dunno I'll look.


I'd read a lot of good things about the Bad Monkey, and why I was gonna buy it. I was disappointed when told they were out of'em. Like I said, this Swell B-Drive was by far the best thing I played, but at $200+ I just didn't have that much to spend.
I don't use overdrive that much, except that I keep a little grit in the VT pedal. The Tone Driver gives it a little more push when I want it. It's OK for now I suppose.

You'd just have to look. I'm guessing it's black label. A lot of times velcro can pull the label off of those pedals.

There is also a SN decoder on the bossarea page. The serial # on you pedal is probably in the battery cavity.

That Swell B-Drive looks like a cool pedal. If the ToneDriver is working for you than it's all good. Honestly since I have a great fuzz,...I use my SD-2 in conjuction with my OC-2. The lead channel as a clean boost since I have a slight volume drop off with the OC-2,...then I use the crunch channel to add a bit of grit and get a sort of overdriven organ sound.

I actually agree... I think there should be a pedalboard thread with more pictures and less (but not zero) chat and a general pedal discussion thread for random photos and discussion and such. (...as I contribute to the noise :rolleyes:)

wow, that was fast. I haven't changed much of anything since I put mine together this past weekend, but here's a quick reminder.

I did get a couple of new instrument cables, though. I've more or less hard-wired the main out and tuner out into the loop master. They're right-angle cables that attach to the LM and run under the board and out the left side. I have 'em strapped to the pedaltrain via velcro and twisty-tie. I have a rack mount tuner racked with my GBE750, so now instead of the tuner out on the back of the amp, I'm running out of the LM tuner out, so I have footswitchable tuning mute now.

Oh, I also velcro'd the loop master in place, so it's not crooked any more.

Oh number two... the signal chain is bass-->LoopMaster{loop 1-->XXL, loop 2-->MuRF, loop 3-->DL4, Tuner Out-->Rackmount Korg tuner}-->Genz Benz GBE750.
