Here's my 1979 Sabre. '79 seems to be a popular year for the Sabre.

The bridge pickup looks further back then the Stingray.
What is the difference in position (or is it actually the same, which I doubt).

Back about 1979
It started out as a Tobacco Brown sunburst Mighty Myte Pbody rear routed with P-bass pickup in the MM stingray position along with MM pre-amp. The Bannana plate is mounted inside the body. It had a Fender 60' maple neck. Then the neck developed a S twist and It was replaced with a MIJ rosewood neck. The finish was very crazed so I stripped it an saw it was "Tiger Striped" ash I sanded and seald it and a guitar student who worked as a car painter agreed to paint it. Funny he wanted to wait until he had a "royal blue" car job so he could use the same paint on the body he was spraying on the car. I later added the neck pickup and S Duncan Picup and switching. This thing is well over 11lbs

I believe it is the same as the bridge position of a G&L L-2000. The pickups are the same dimensions as the G&L.

I though mine was off but it was spaced using the toilet seat pickguard. Tbridge style throws you off
I got this from Musicman rep a long time ago. One the Sabre body is bassed on the P-body. The Stingray has a larger body but The PU center distance is 30" from the NUT based on a 34 inch scale bass.
For those looking for replacement pickups, I have recently learned the G&L magnetic field pickups are the same size and specs of the original 8 pole Sabres. I have only seen the ceramic versions for sale from G&L though... I feel a project comin on!

Same size, yes. Same specs, No. The adjustable pole pieces on the MFD are a dead giveaway. Also the whole idea of the MFD is due to a different magnet alignment. The Sabre was Leo's last pickup before the MFD.
A Sabre spaced bass using MFDs, a 2 band MM copy preamp, and use the G&L switching scheme to replace the 2 useless SAbre switches would be a nifty project. All Leo ideas just spanning 2 different generations.

I can see the Sterling HH in the Sabre There is something about the pickgaurd and control plate of the Sabre I like better than a rounded pickgaurd and blade switch of the Sterling. I am going to have to revisit the Sterling HH

I have 4 sabres now but 2 of them have problems (1 of those 2 is completely dissassembled bor majort body repair work.)
Hey, I wanna play too. Here's my 1979 Sabre...she doesn't get out much at all nowadays. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a little bit tempted by Malthumb's offer. But I'm a 4 slinger.
As a matter of fact, her older sister (1978 Sting Ray) don't get out much either....

LOL...I like, I like! Nonethless, it is tempting still, very tempting. Only if it was a real 4 stringer.
I busted it out for a bit...can you say "Stomp" by Bro Jo? I also have an extra '79 Sabre preamp on a plate, go figure.
