Potential Singer Caught in a Lie

I just spoke to the guy. When I asked him if he was the guy in the specific video, his phone began to cut out and hung up. He called back a minute later saying that it was him and they put makeup on him to make him darker because being darker in a funk band gave him more credibility in the late 70's early 80's. He also said that people had asked him this before. When I mentioned Wayne Cooper and mentioned the difference in eye color, he said that I had the wrong video. He said that he was gonna email the link to the correct video then call me back.

If the guy in the video is definitely not him I'd be saying thanks but no thanks. He's clearly committed to the fib so your band will have no cred if your singer is trotting around saying he was in some act that he wasn't.

I remember way back in my first band one of the most popular slackers in school wanted to sing for our band because it would up his coolness factor. The guy looked good and to our surprise he could sing. Since he had never sung before, he didn't have any gear at all - but we had plenty of mics and stands to spare.

One day, another slacker walked up to me and said, "Hey - don't you guys have a so-and-so brand cardioid mic in your gear?" I said, "Yeah, not many of those around".

"I guess not - your singer just tried to swap it to me for a bag of weed."

Singers are narcissistic enough as it is. A lying singer can't be anything but trouble.

I've worked with guys claiming to have sung with everyone from James Brown to the Drifter/Coasters to Elvis Presley himself.
Two of the guys were amazing and the other wasn't.
It all comes down to talent and what they sound like now, irrespective of their history.
It's not like you are co-signing a loan for him.

I used to work with a blues singer in Chicago who claimed to have studied theory with Arnold Shoenberg (one of the giants in modern classical music). But he played all of his songs in A, and with the same changes, and didn't seem to know any theory. :eyebrow:

But he was hiring me, and he was honest about the pay etc, so I didn't care if he lied about his history. :)

words cant say how disappointed .BUT NOT SURPRISED..I am..you guys are the 5th rock band I've jammed with & EVERONE HAS HELD ME TO DOUBLE STANDARDS..& I KNOW IT'S RACIALLY MOTIVATED..you guys damn near run background checks on me..ALL 5 BANDS found fault with MY performance while making just as MANY MISTAKES AS I DID AS MUSICIANS..sometimes MORE overall..EVERY 1 of these bands wasn't looking for the good I did or could bring but looking for reasons to politely exscuse me..WHEN THE REAL REASON IS YALLS BAND CANT HANDLE HAVING A BLACK FRONTMAN..even *redacted* told me Saturday he couldn't see me as yall frontman..that we'd "split" lead vocals..so what was I gonna do..be yalls cheerleader..a "look @ the clown" sideshow..we "cool white boys..see..we even gotta black guy..YOU LIED BOUT THE BAND BEING "flexible" for what i'd be good at..that set list you sent me today was the SAME as before..ally all did was categorize the sh**..EVERY song I suggested was under the "will get too it" category..so of course you'll deny these things..probably shoot me a "f** U" message back..it's ok..IMA DAMN GOOD SINGER..A EXCELLENT SINGER/LYRICIST & NONE OF YOU "won't grow up" GARAGE band musicians will change that..it's REALLY SAD cause we ALL KNOW I showed my talents & with a LITTLE RESPECT & less ego we could've done some good things..instead you wanna get all ARROGANT & run background checks.. (mr "i'm in management"..& REALLY..WHO CARES??) like you "special.".newflash..you wasn't the ONLY 1 OUT THERe WITH A COLLEGE DEGREE..IF..YOU even got 1.. so thanks for nothing..thanks for reminding me WHY this country ain't really changed & GOING NOWHERE FAST..i end on this..NOTHING LASTS FOREVER & THE SAME ARROGANCE GOT CAUCASIANS LIKE ALL OF YOU ARE IS WHATS BRINGING THIS NATION TO ITS KNEES RIGHT BEFORE YOUR EYES..truely PITIFUL..BE BLESSED..yall gone need it..

I don't know why people try to pass themselves off as someone they are not. Earlier this year, I had a keyboard player tell me that he had just finished a tour playing for Mark Farner (formerly of Grand Funk Railroad). There were only two problems with his story. First, I know Mark Farner. Second, Mark was home recovering from pacemaker surgery at the time this guy was allegedly on tour with him.
