Power amp sections in bassheads

I use IMG Stageline STA-400D rack amps. Those are clean Class D amps based on Hypex modules and power supplies. There are related amps with different power specs. It's much easier and safer than trying to build from scratch. Parts and build quality are good. RF emissions are tested and certified to be within bounds for commercial devices. It's hard to beat what you get for the cost.

They're ideal for general purpose but with a preamp or multi-effects rack or a set of pedals, anything goes, bass guitar, whatever.

The specs for adapting it for mono use and preamps ins, are easily available. I think I recall finding a whole blog about using this unit for home stereo. The great thing about it, it has it's own power amp, and that PA can be tapped to drive a preamp - that is what GK does.

I am looking around for a pre amp or an amp with a blown power amp, to use with this unit.. I used the have a Yamaha PB1, and I am pretty sure it could fit in there, if I cut a hole for vertical clearance.

Ampeg did in fact design their own amps and power amps. They are unique to Ampeg, the entire product is manufactured in China from Ampeg designs.

Most class D amplifier modules used in this market are NOT designed or manufactured in China. They are designed in either the US, Denmark, Italy or the UK and manufactured mostly in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam.

Bullpucky, the 125ASX2 has never been made in China. It’s made in Penang, Malaysia.

All 125ASX2 modules originating out of China are counterfeit goods from stolen IP. They are not an ICEPower product.

I have the legal documentation which is necessary for safety certification and ongoing factory inspections which must be maintained for the part to be used in a certified product. The Chinese built counterfeit parts do not have the documentation necessary, in fact they used forged ICEPower documentation which has been flagged by all testing agencies as invalid.

Darkglass uses ICEPower, Phil Jones has used ICEPower in some products.

ICEpower is used in some of the best names in audio, and have been for a while!

that is what you look for in any integrated amp or bass head. When you are looking for a quality unit imho.

ain't this using a way of using ice modules for the core of class-d amps these days a little bit like in the old days using vacuum tube as the "core" to build amps using using stuff like 6v6, 6l5, 6550, kt-88, etc tubes? not exactly but maybe just a little bit kind of similar?

Is there an existing thread about what bassheads have what power amp sections?

There's lots of talk that many class D amps are using same or similar power amps (ICE or something). I don't need a thousand watts, so I'm thinking of just getting a used class D amp (even if I don't like the preamp sound) and use my own preamp plugged into the effects return. But first it would be interesting to find out more about the different power amp sections in different heads...

What companies are creating their own power amps?

Where could I find info about third party power amps used in bass heads?

Could be wrong but I think Orange built it's own proprietary Class C output section.

Jule uses Hypex modules. He previously used Demeter output sections. I don't know if Demeter uses Ice power or proprietary.

They do not really promote it because it is about the same as promoting the company of capacitors or pots they use, it is just a part of the whole.

It really does not matter or everyone would love the Agular Tonehammer and be done, but many do not care for it.
Hmm... Darkglass Microtubes has to be the amp everyone loves?

Oh... Not everyone does and it is quite different from the Agular...

How about the GK Legacy? That has to be the one everyone agrees is the best head.

They all are very different in sound and performance yet, they all use the same amp modules.

Heck... Mesa have 5 heads that all sound different and all use the exact same module.

Messa D-800 is quite different to the Mesa TT 800, same power amp.

Do not get hung up on one part of the whole.

I’m sure agedhorse would not recommend this in anyway but if you have a bass amp with a ICE power module , if all specs the same except the wattage, could you not upgrade your amps current power module for one with more watts? They don’t look that difficult to remove and install

No, different ICEpower models have different requirements for mounting, cooling, low voltage supplies, housekeeping, etc. Besides, generally there’s not enough space.

It is good that we emphasize that China is NOT the only country that supplies modules and circuits, and as @agedhorse pointed out, when China supplies, it might often be fraudulent products.

Yes, and in this case, when the country of origin is stated as China, it has to be a counterfeit product since the genuine product is manufactured in Malaysia.

One Trickfish model, the Bullhead 1K, uses a Pascal power amp. All of their other amps, I believe use an ICE module. Older Tecamp products used a Powersoft module but I think that’s long since been changed.

That was the first question that came to my mind. There are threads that go on for pages about (at least) Genz-Benz and Genzler amps which are excellent amps and well proven.
