Poweramp Recomendations

I turn the volume on the power amp almost all the way up, probably around 90-95%. The preamp then becomes the "master" volume. I found 9:45 or so to be a good volume for the room I was playing last Saturday. The soundman miked my cabinet and did not take a direct line to the P-A.

Well, over here. $500 - $1000. Which I suppose would be about $250-$500 american (Stretching it). I don't mind if it's a bit on the heavy side, but I don't need a tonne of power, that's all. I mean, if it's too heavy, I might as well just bring the 400+. And if it ends up been too expensive, i'l just look at getting a Thunderfunk or something..

Well, you should be able to find a number of amps in that price range. Ideally, on the lightweight, "switching" amp side, I like the Stewart World line, and you may be able to get a 1.6 or 2.1 in that price range (my 2.1 was not much more than $500). On the heavy, lead-sled, side of the equation, I like the Crest CA line, and you might be able to find a CA6 or CA9 in that price range. One of my CA9's only set me back $499, which is why I could not resist it!

But there should be other great options in that price range.

Ok. That's what I'll try next time around then! :) Yeah, I was definitely running the volume on the RBI I had at least around 1:30-2:00, with the QSC only at about 50%. Donno if that made any difference or not, but oh well.

I've had great luck with a crown K1 (1500w@4 ohms bridged). The k2 has even more power if you need more.

I've been driving a pair of EA VL-210's with it for years, love the sound. Nice and light, ridiculously high damping factor. Banana plugs for easy bridging. Amp doesn't even need a cooling fan, it's a class D switching amp.

Man, with the weight of those VL cabs you might as well just get a Crest CA9! I do remember those cabs sounding great though. What pre do you use?

Also, have you compared the K1 with class AB or H amps? I'm curious because I had a Crest ST amp which is class D switching and although it was clear and powerfull it didn't have the same girth as a more traditional amp such as the CA series.

I ask because I REALLY like the idea of not having a fan in the poweramp.

The Crest ST has a switching power supply, the Crown K series doesn't. My K2 seems to make tonnes of girth, and they're very popular subwoofer amps for PA applications. FWIW, I own a PLX (H), the K2 (D), and a Hafler (A/AB). For me, they all work great for bass, and I grab whichever one has the features I need for a specific gig.

I ask because I REALLY like the idea of not having a fan in the poweramp.

The K series works best with air spaces above and below in the rack. Lots of guys get by without doing this though.
