Practice bass....

I used to do the opposite... the types of shows I was playing would tend to have a lot of beer flying around and I was always worried one of my favorite basses would walk off so I bought cheaper basses I didn’t have to worry about and recorded with and practiced on my favorites.

Now I wish I just played the nice ones and not sweated the small stuff.
 
I played cheap basses for an embarrassing length of time. I didn't have the money & didn't know enough for all those years to appreciate what that money bought! after years of avoiding Fender basses (although I liked the Jazz, it was more money than I had to spend on a bass), I finally found my mate in a Fender Jag Deluxe. I'm saying all that to say to buy the bass that suits you best sound & feelwise, even if it takes awhile to get it! You'll be so glad you did! IMHO
