Practice time guilt? .... anybody else?

Same for me. But to be honest, I did struggle during the first summer. I usually went out to catch every single ray of sunlight. I was raised that way; not to stay in the "cave." Then I became a bass player, and made the decision to do what I feel; to play and make music. I still enjoy the sunshine, when I commute between home and rehearsal space

Regarding fresh air and sunshine... pfft. That's why they invented outdoor gigs.

I practice after the kids are in bed and the dishes are done. I'll usually alternate one night piano, one night bass. Then I need a few minutes in front of the tv to unwind before sleep. I probably practice 4-5 nights a week for an hour or so each.

If I have new songs to learn for an upcoming gig, I'll do more.

If it's beautiful out, I'm taking my kids out to have fun. The audience isn't gonna say "wow he didn't do a 32nd note flourish on the turnaround of Mustang Sally last night-- he must not be practicing!"

Just curious if any other TB'ers get a guilty feeling when they are home INSIDE practicing when it's an absolutely beautiful afternoon / evening outside ..... I know I do.

More precisely when you get home from work, (if you're a 9-5'er) and you know there's a few more hours of beautiful weather / sunshine left but you go to your bass space, plug in and practice anyway.... beautiful weather be damned!

Anybody else struggle with this?

No I just go outside to practice AND enjoy the day, I can multitask.

On the contrary. As a sufferer of anxiety which kept me in my house for a number of years I felt less guilty by making use of that time honing my craft.

I'm all better lately, by the way.

Isn't it possible to enjoy gorgeous weather from inside?

Living in the south, unless it's early spring or early fall, it's either humid as heck or cold...so no I don't feel guilty being inside.

This comes after being born and raised in Southern California so I had 38 years of being an outdoorsy person...kinda got my fill.

The weather here is brutally pleasant pretty much every day. As such, I can enjoy nice weather when I want. Sorry, but that is why I live here...

Moved to the Pacific North West 8 months ago. Been a horrible and long winter. I am getting in the sunshine whenever I can.

Night time is for practicing...

Jes' all personable and friendly like: Maybe after you've lived there another 8 months you'll notice that Northwest is one word.

I am not the misanthrope or agoraphobe that seems to like this topic but on my part it bears saying that the P.NW. is one of my very FAVORITE places in the US and it's a major fantasy of mine to have one of those island houses and watch the rain from behind big windows, with the woodfire, the dog and my bourbon, while I play a nicely rebuilt Baldwin grand.

As to the OQ, Put me in the do what calls you and skip guilt group. To quote Carlos Santana; "You have to live outside of music to have anything to say within music." I do almost all my practicing either early or late.

Like most folks, I live in a place where the weather is highly variable, so when the weather is particularly nice I somehow feel obligated to do something outdoors to take advantage of it. (Unfortunately, that usually means mowing the lawn or doing some other kind of yard work.) I didn't realize how much I actually resented this until, some time ago, I had the opportunity to live in Santa Barbara CA for a year, where the weather was perfect almost every day. I was astonished how different it felt to not feel that obligation: If I had something I wanted to do indoors on any given day -- whether practicing bass or anything else -- I didn't have to think about it, because I knew the weather would be just as nice tomorrow.

Guilt? Nah! Anxiety, yes. I've got a couple vocal parts I want to nail down for tonight. I believe in incubation, meaning I ordinarily want to nail a part at least the day before. And here it is the day of! Good, Bunk! When I get up tomorrow (probably lunchtime) I've got to get going on a dozen songs I haven't played in several months for the Link Removed for a gig coming up in two weeks. After that, I've got a gig with an electric mandolin guy out in Columbus, OH, couple shows on Memorial Day weekend, some of the material I remember from the last time (5 years ago?) and most I don't.

I did go out and work in the garden this morning anyway.

Best audience ever. They run and dance during the show, but they never come staggering, drunk up to me afterwards to tell me what a great show is was and ask if they can play my instrument for a bit.
