Praise Report: GHS Precision Flats

I just installed the short scale set on a Gibson SG(EB). This will be my Marshall Grant wannabe voice.

It's tragic that as they break in the highs cannot stay this crisp, but I'm expecting better behavior in this regard than the other brand of traditional flats I'm used to.

Totally happy with GHS P Flats long or short!

Does anyone know of a dye or colour reference that would give a similar appearance to the older pre-pandemic purple of the ghs precision flats? I think I've seen a post from someone who did that but I can't seem to find it.

Funny you should bring up this subject...

I just received a new order of the Precision Flats 45-95 today, and after reading a couple of threads in the last year about mismatched silk colors (as in different shades of purple) on them, I was curious to see how these were.

I was pleasantly surprised to see perfectly matched silk color, which is even darker than the ones I had back in 2018.

Conventional bass wisdom would tell me a set of strings named "Precision Flats" should go on a Precision bass. BUT... I've been very curious as to how they might sound on a Jazz bass.

So, here's my question...

Anyone out there who's using (or has used) the Precision Flats on a Jazz? I would appreciate any feedback as to how you're enjoying the combo.

Thanks.

EDIT: I've tried a set a few years ago on my P bass and really liked the sound of "rich dark chocolate". What I'm looking for now is the smooth and mellow sound of "creamy milk chocolate". ;):D

Sounded good to me, but I ultimately preferred the sound of TI flats or D'Addario tapewounds on this bass. I wonder if it has to do with the "V-Mod" pickups. My 2014 Jazz Bass has the Fender Custom Shop 60s pickups, and I suspect that one might sound better with the GHS Precision Flats than this "V-Mod" Jazz Bass did.

No matter, I still have the 2014 Jazz with the 60s pickups, but sold this one with the V-Mods. Was a great bass, but I never used it much, and had opportunity to grab something else of more immediate interest.

I was hoping you'd chime in with an audio clip, and here you are... ;)

I would love to own a 2014 Am Std Jazz as a perfect companion to my 2014 Am Std Precision!

After some consideration, I've decided to reserve the Precision Flats for my Precision after all. Spock advised me that's the only logical thing to do.

I once tried the La Bella 760FL on my Jazz and didn't like the way they seemed to take the Jazz bass character out of my Jazz. The Precision Flats are known for their "woody warmth with a focused punch" and they would better match up with the natural character of a P bass.

So I just received this beautiful poor man’s Pino Palladino clone, and was pleasantly surprised to find a set of flats already installed. The seller informed me that they are GHS precision flats in 55-105 gauge. I find them quite nice, but I don’t like the feel of the 55 gauge G string. My original intention was to put a used and broken in set of Labella DTB 760 FL (104 gauge) flats on the bass.

Would I be better off just ordering a 45 gauge G string and sticking with the precision flats? According to the original owner, the strings are eight months old.

I would normally just make the swap and see whether or not I like it… But the set up is perfect on this bass as-is and I know that putting lighter strings on it will require some adjustments. Just curious what opinions you guys might have to share. Thanks!

Before you start making any changes...

Here are the tension figures for the Precision Flats, 3050 vs. M3050:

Precision Flatwound 3050:

G 055 - 68.8 lbs.
D 070 - 62.2
A 090 - 56.9
E 105 - 41.2 (Total 229.1)

Precision Flatwound M3050:

G 045 - 41.5 lbs.
D 065 - 50.7
A 085 - 51.2
E 105 - 41.2 (Total 184.6)

Replacing the 55G with the 45G would mean 27.3 lbs. in reduction, or 12% of the total tension.

Great information, thank you! Do you have the tension numbers for 105 DR Legends as well?
