Praise Report: GHS Precision Flats

According to the GHS website, the new low B string is 37.25" in winding length, while the rest (E-G) are still 38".

A lot of the info on juststrings.com is dated. For example, they still have the GHS Pressurewounds as 36.5" in winding length after I told them they should update the info almost two years ago!

Juststrings package pictures show 37.25 but when I ordered about a year ago, they send a custom set...
and the the B was the only string that was 36. i emailed a week ago and still that is the case. A year ago
I emailed GHS and the rep sent me a longer B string to resolve my disturbance. So now just trying to find a distributor selling the five string set with long B. They are on amazon but dont want to buy w/o talking to to someone first. thx

So now just trying to find a distributor selling the five string set with long B.

I order my GHS strings from Strings By Mail, which is based in Michigan, where GHS is located.

They don't have the Precision Flats 5-string set officially listed on their website (meaning no old stock), but if you would contact them thru email using the link on the website, a guy named Matt will respond. He can special order anything from GHS.

EDIT: [email protected].

Thought about that, not sure if thats too big a jump 95-126, and stomaching $17-20 for the B string.
Thanks,

I use the light 4-string set on my P bass and find them to be nicely balanced both in tone and playing feel - very comfortable without being too loose.

I'm guessing the 126B would go nicely with the light set.

Here are their actual tension figures:

G 045 - 41.5 lbs.
D 060 - 46.5
A 075 - 38.5
E 095 - 36.7
B 126 - 34.4

(197.6)

EDT: By the way, I got the single GHS Pressurewound 128B for $7.70 ea. from SBM. You should contact Matt for pricing for the P Flat single B.

Any idea on where to get a 5 string set with the 37+ inch B string ?
JustStrings 'still' only has 36 inch B strings.
A light 5 string set wouldnt be a bad idea either.
Thanks

You're asking about the XLFB126 single (which has a 38" winding length), which used to be in a custom 5st set of Precision Flats. We discontinued the set a while ago, but you can still buy the single string.

You would have to order the M3050 set and the XLFB126 single separately.

Hi Jon, Thanks for the reply. The 3050-5 is advertised as 37.25 on juststrings and amazon
Thats what I tried to order from juststrings and they send and still send a 36 inch B.
I do see 3050-5 on amazon. 37.25 Do you think they will come with the 37.25 B or not?

It shouldn't, as we changed that spec nearly two years ago.

As for WHO will have that, I'm not in sales so I have no idea who ordered what, and when.

ergo my confusion and hesitance to purchase. You would think juststrings would have current product and
info, especially since I made a big issue of this 1 year ago and it seems the only place I was able to attain a 38 B was from GHS directly as a freeby as a result of juststrings sending a 36 B. Still dont know where,
except ill try a custom order from stringsonline as recommended in a post above.

Haven't read all 81 pages of this thread, but just put a set of GHS P-Flats on my P bass. As with most flats, they are pretty live out of the package. I've got a set of well broken in LaBella's on my Jazz bass that sound like butter tastes. I'm playing the snot out of that P bass to get these suckers broken in to make them even better than they are now.

Here's one of my bass hero's John Cowan noodling around on my P bass and he seemed to like the strings. Endorsement deal maybe?? I mean, he IS the bass player for the Doobie Brothers.

So I went ahead and put the light set on my jazz bass, I'm very impressed! They are very thumpy and growly while being easy on my fingers. I find that I can do runs easily and that they're a bit more articulate than the set I had before.

Now to give them a few years to break in. Really looking forward to it!
I've have a light set on my '71 Jazz for over a year and have not noticed any problems. It's one of those little girl necks that tends to move at the slightest change in season or what shirt I have on, but I've had no issues with the light set on it. And...it sounds really, really good! Perfect set for this bass. It was even one of the older sets that had the really thudy E and took forever for the other strings to balance out. Once they did it's all wonderful.

After playing my active 5-string Yamaha exclusively for the last couple of months, I decided to pull out my P with P Flats to celebrate the new year. And boy, it feels like coming home. P + P = 2P. (Precision on Precision = Double the Pleasure.)

They are almost 6 mths old now but hardly broken in yet due to the limited play time so far. Hope to put them to work more this year.

Finally got an interface for my computer and made an unexpected discovery...I can hear chorusing clear as day on the D and a bit on the G as well, which wasn’t obvious through an amp. Pickups have been dumped looooow (6mm clearance on the D) and I’ve loosened the string to check for twisting - neither seem to be the problem. Doesn’t matter so much live but I want to record with this bass and that’s not gonna cut it. Any ideas? Just a bad string?

First: plug into amp and use headphones. If your strings are bad you will hear it clear as day. If not, it's not your strings. Secondly, plug a different bass or other stringed instrument into your new interface. Do you hear a chorus or any other effect? When something suddenly pops up good or bad it is likely the last thing you changed. In this case your new interface.

I eneded up putting a set on a MM stingray 5. First impressions (ramblings) is that there’s a vast difference between the D and G and the other three strings. The B,E and A all sound even, thick and thumpy but the D and G sound like new rounds. Now I know their new and flats take time to mellow. I’ve had this same experience with a couple sets of TI’s and they’ve mellowed out to sheer perfection. I’m surprised at the B string. It sounds good and even with the other two bottom strings. No more or less thuddy or thumpy. Sounds good up to around the seventh fret which is all the higher I’d ever go with any B string anyway. The tension seems even with the E although I’m not a super ballanced tension fanatic anyway. There’s a certian super high frequency squeek when moving around that I can hear through my amp but I’m sure that’ll probably wear off in time as well. Basically I’m looking for something with a little more low end kick than the TI’s that I love. Although I’m primarily a finger player I really want/need something that sounds good with a pick either open or palm muted. My main problem, and I don’t mean to sound snobby, is that I have to many cool basses with different sets of strings that all take time to break in and I can only play one bass at a time. Ha! I’m trying to get a set of pressure wounds to mellow up a bit on a jazz bass as well. Took it to practice last night and it sounded really cool. Had a hard time deciding wich set of GHS strings I wanted to give the time to......I know, first world problems and all. Wouldn’t be a big deal if I didn’t have tow work all day and I could just sit and play. These strings would get broken in a lot faster!

Been trying different strings on my Bicentennial T-Bird. Had TI flats on it for a few years and got the urge to see if anything sounded better. Tried Boomers, TI Superalloys, and GHS Pressurewounds. All were nice but nothing really inspiring. Just for the heck of it I thought about slapping some Precision Flats on it just so I could say I tried. Went to rehearsal and...I liked it! I was really expecting it to be rather dull, but not at all. Great presence, heft and mids in the right place. Sounded good finger style and with a pick. I kept thinking, "I really like this" while playing. I think they are going to stay on for a while. They sounded great, and that feel--that wonderful GHS PF smoothness! Nothing to remotely dislike. Knowing me I'll try something else at some point (because it's so easy to change strings on a T-Bird), but for now I've found a great match that I figured was going to be a waste of time.
