Double Bass Preamp before tuner?

Hi all,

I'm looking to find a way to mute my double bass while tuning when i'm sending my signal to FOH.

My current setup is Full Circle -> GK mb150e -> XLR out to FOH.
Pretty simple and works great. I've been using a tuner in the effect send and return which is nice but doesn't give me the option to mute the XLR output to FOH which is kind of annoying.

I'm concerned with audio quality so i keep my signal chain as simple and clean as possible.

I have a Boss TU-2 tuner which has a 1Mohm input so impedance wise it should be ok, but is there any other way in which the Boss would degrade or change the signal quality?

I have two preamps, the Fishamn platinum pro bass and the Headway Edb-1. Will inserting either of these improve the signal going into the tuner? And will it still matter after the signal has left the Boss tuner?

Has anyone experimented with a mute pedal between the GK's XLR output and the FOH? This would mean i don't have to change anything going into the amp.

I also use a full circle and a edb1. Plugging in directly into the tuner (before the preamp) dramatically degraded my sound. I go: edb1 => tuner => DI (whatever they use at the venue) => amp. This way i can even combine my full circle with an ehrlund, mute the FOH as wel as the amp and it gives me the best results soundwise. I think it wouldn't be a good idea to put a tuner after the DI out from your amp, as the tuner output is unbalanced...

The GK MB150S has an input impedance of 1 MOhms, so this is the same and should not degrade your sound. But the tuner mute switch may cause a pop, so this could be a reason not to use the tuner in your chain but on a seperate output like you already did.

A tuner output helps in this case so you can mute the output more easily and still be able to tune. (But I don't think the GK has one.)

@Seba: The OP didn't mention an EDB1, so this is not an option unless he buys one.

@Seba Thanks, is your tuner also a TU-2 or another type/brand as seems to make quite a difference.

Good comment on the unbalanced output, that would be the case if i would use a standard pedal after the xlr out of the amp. I was thinking more about a box or D.I. with a mute function that has XLR in and XLR out.

@DoubleMIDI Thanks, you are right the GK doesn't have this tuner output. And this Boss type pedal doesn't seem to suffer from a pop sound when switching.
So you think the signal quality should be the same with or without the TU-2? That would be an easy solution!

As a matter of fact, i did list the Edb-1 as a preamp option in my original post ;-)

I use a boss TU-3 sometimes when I play. I used it yesterday at an outdoor gig where I wanted to tune in between every couple songs. I must have a bad ear because I don't hear the difference that much.

I plugged straight into the tuner from my full circle before going into my radial pre-z. I tried it this way to hear if there was a difference since many people complain about this issue. I personally didn't notice the difference. I normally use the tuner output on the radial, which I recommend to you if you are up for a new preamp. I never liked the the pro platinum preamp. The radial has mute button which can maybe solve your problem.
