Precision Bass Input Loose?

Got a new Pro 2 P bass a couple of weeks back, super instrument.

Been using standard angled cable at home for practice.

Connection was a bit crackly earlier....looked down, and the cable movement had worked the input socket a little loose.

Not hanging out or anything drastic....so being a P bass novice, I grabbed some pliers, and tightened the six-sided bit that holds it in....not sure of the proper name for it!

Gave it a tighten, and it seems fine now. Was what I did okay? Quite surprised it became loose so quickly!

Well, pliers wouldn't be the correct tool for that job. You risk marring the nut with the pliers making almost all of the contact at a corner instead of a flat edge on the nut. A basic spanner or crescent wrench would be a better choice. Aside from that, don't overtighten it.

Ideally, this would be fixed with the pickguard off the bass. This way, you can hold the back of the jack still as you tighten. If you tighten the jack with the pickguard still attached, it can be easy to just spin the entire jack instead of actually threading the nut further onto the jack. When that happens, the wiring inside the bass tends to wrap itself around the jack until it eventually pulls tight and breaks.

If the bass is OK now and the jack is no longer loose, you might as well leave it as-is. If it gets loose or you have other issues, take the pickguard off and make sure you're not messing the wiring up while you tighten the jack nut.

Seems alright at the mo, so hope to leave well alone! Don't think one quick tighten should cause any damage, so as long as it stays in place, should be good to go.

I should add the pliers I used were wide and flat edged, same width as each corner of the nut I tightened.....so no damage caused on that score.

I always check the nuts, bolts and screws on a new Bass when I get it. The input jack was loose on my American Performer P-Bass when I got it.

If you need to look at the output jack again or if someone else comes across this thread, remove the jack from the pickguard and if there is not one there already install one of these between the jack and the inside side of the guard. It will keep the jack from turning and coming loose. It’s an internal tooth lock washer. You used to be able to pick up the right size at Radio Shack. Might have to look online now.
