Precision Bass Shootout - 1976 vs. 2009

I like the tone of #2 the best (though they are very similar). I might wistfully like to think that #2 then is the 1976, but I could only guess. So in fact I will guess that #1 is the 1976.
Boy, a lot of you have ability for detecting and identifying certain sonic subtleties that I will never, ever have, god love ya.

That new P looks GREAT! Love the black with maple. Beautiful.
They sound pretty close to me, and both sound good. I assume that Reddi is providing a bit of its own tone that move these two a bit closer together, and your '76' is so modified (with, if I read correctly, a much newer pickup that is probably close to the newer bass, regardless of the custom shop thing) that those two are probably closer than the 'years' would suggest.
If I had to guess, I'd say the second clip was the newer bass, since the bit more upper mid response is very typical of a maple board (could just be the different pots and slightly different pickup speaking there). However, again, both sound close, and I assume we are hearing a bit of the REDDI in that clip (that nice, round, warm low end).
I've been impressed with that era and model of Fender P's, and it looks like you got a good one!

Im with you.. I don't think I have enough knowledge about p basses to venture a guess. (or I just don't want to risk being wrong
)But, I do like the 2nd one more..by a lot.

Great playing, really wonderful articulation and restrained sense of swing.
My favorite is number 2.
It's easy to make a fool of oneself in a blind test but here is what I am observing.
Track 1 is more of what I would expect of a 70's tone, edgy, more mid oriented, a bit more clank, more output. The instrument seems more resonnant implying older wood. Nice tone to cut in the mix.
Track 2 has a lot more bass and warmth. It's a litte fat and laid back. It sounds like a current precision. What puzzles me is this sounds like a rosewood neck yet it is a maple neck. Are current pickups that warm? Could be. There is a tad of narly growl which is also really nice. You seem more at ease on that instrument, you flow a tad better.

You know Ken, other than the tube and the output transformer of the REDDI doing their thing, I don't hear a lot of EQ differences between the REDDI and a regular flat SS DI. Probably isn't dead flat, but it's pretty close to my ears in comparison with my other DI's.
Glad you like the new bass...me too! Fought getting one for a while, but in the end, looks won out and now I'm back in black!
I love mine, just got it fairly recently! Made a couple of cosmetic changes, but it is all stock. I am impressed with mine's weight and balance and of course it sounds great too! Enjoy it!
Cream pickup cover's a nice touch. Me, I'll be leaving my black one on there, but I like it on yours.
I dig it. They both sound so close that you can just pick the one that feels the best. I REALLY like the look of your new one, and that whole vibe fits the gigs you do very well also. Just a simple, classic P! Nice!
