BTW, I'd like to point out that I had a pickguard on that bass like that long before I ever heard of Marcus Miller. I'd like to think he stole it from me, but I don't know him, so I'm sure it's just great minds thinking alike.

Very close. I think I heard a bit more of an upper mid presence in #1, which I attribute to the rosewood fretboard, so that's the 76.

Patiently Waiting For The Next British Invasion
Too funny, I have that exact 2009 USA P and yesterday I was in my local music store and tried out a 73 P, the 73 was stock as a rock and in real good shape for it's age. I played it without plugging it in and I was not amazed, but kind of surprised that it pretty much felt and sounded like my 2009, don't know what I was expecting really...

I picked Track 1 for the 1976 P.
It sounds like the Custom Shop 60's Pickup in the Fender Mike Dirnt P I used to have.
I like track 2 solo'ed better but I'm sure track 1 would sound better in a band setting.

Both are similar, of course, but through headphones I prefer the livelier sound of the first one: it has a little more up top and down below. The second sounds a little more "traditional", I guess... meaning slightly lower-fi. Anyway, I'll say that the 1st one is the '09.

Second clip sounds a bit fatter, but I wouldn't venture to guess which bass is which. There are so many variables when it comes to this that I am just interested in knowing which one is which! I've had Ash/Maple basses that were dark and smooth sounding, and Rosewood/Alder that were bright and growly. Both sound great though. Nicely done on the '09! What is the weight of it?
Personally, I think the giveaway is in the fretboard material. Track 1 seems to have a bit more 'twang' in it, while track 2 is noticeably darker-sounding. So I *think* track 1 is the maple-necked '09, and track 2 is the rosewood '76.
Whether I'm right or not, I think I prefer the sound of track 2, but there's not much in it. I'd be perfectly content to get my hands on either specimen if I were in your position!
