Presonus Studio Studio Channel Preamp

I've been running mine for over 2 years now.

Here's my settings, keep in mind my goal is to make it sound like a DB659:

Gain - 12:00
Tube Drive - 12:00

I worked long and hard on these compressor settings to generate what I'll call "punch and sustain".

Thresh - 12:00
Ratio - 9:00 (like 8:1)
Attack - 9:00
Release - 12:00
Gain - 1:00

EQ
LOW
Freq is at 30 Hz
Gain is at (2)

MID
Q - 12:00
Freq - 12:00
Gain - 12:00

High
Freq - 10:30
Gain - (1)

Master is at (3)

I only use the "Auto" setting for slapping on the compressor,
because with my settings the transients are not controlled enough.

Thanks for all the input, Supertanker. I haven't messed w/the stock tube at all. I racked it the day I took it out of the box and that's where it still is. I appreciate you also sharing your settings. These two lines really make me wish my stuff wasn't crated up right now:

The DB659 is one of the "gold standard" pieces of equipment and "punch and sustain" is something I've not been able to coax out of my SC by itself. Great w/the VT Bass in front of it, but by itself, not so much. I'll try your settings too once I get my hands on my stuff again. Thanks. :)

Lest anyone else reading think I don't like my SC; I do like it. But know that it's NOT a "plug it in and get instant super tone from heaven" piece of gear. If you're a Tweak-a-holic, you'll love this thing. The controls really do interact with each other and everything from input gain to compression to EQ is tweakable/defeatable. Honestly, I've not been able to devote the time and effort necessary to utilize this piece of gear to it's full potential. My job's (which is not playing bass...I wish) been priority #1 for the past year...much to the unfairness towards my family, which should be priority #1. I'm hoping to have much more time for family and music starting very soon. :)

The SC is an awesome piece of gear; it can do so much, but you gotta twist knobs and any recommended settings may or may not work for you. I.E. the "electric bass" settings in the manual were "vanilla OK" for me, but didn't really float my boat. I look forward to trying Riis and Supertankers' settings as it appears they had the time to do it right.

Earlier post / comment of mine:

"*Low Freq - This is a toughy as my rig requires no boost in this arena. Just the opposite, I need to remove certain problem freq's to minimize stage boom ("where's the boom?" Marvin the Martian). I've been using the shelving control at ~40-50 hz with 1-2 dB of attenuation with some success but, next gig, I think I'll try the "Peak" mode. I'm not sure how well this will work with a fixed Q of 0.7."

I got the best results be engaging the "Peak" button and attenuating by 2 dB in the 40 - 80 hz range (9:30 or so). Don't know the exact freq. as the knob is not marked well and doesn't matter as the sweet-spot will vary bass-to-bass.

From my experience, the SC has plenty of output oomph (that's tech speak for "It gots the volts!") I realize that's not exactly scientific, but with two different QSC amps (a PLX and a GX series) I only needed 50% on both the SC's gain and volume to drive either amp to "way loud enough." YMMV, but the SC has plenty of output.

On a side note: My SC/power amp setup is still in transit; will be here in a couple of weeks. My Shuttle 6.0 that I mailed to myself to use in the interim got stolen. :( It never made it to my new address. I claimed the insurance at the post office. I couldn't be ampless for two months...

I found a great deal on a used Demeter HBP-1 (50% of new). It was made in 2001 but you would never know it by looking at it or playing through it. I was pleasantly surprised when the actual pre matched the pics and the description and was in the "like new" working condition the previous owner said it was. I lucked out.

Of course, you can't play a pre by itself...I'm now the proud owner of a Crown XLS1500 too (very happy with this amp!)

I realize this is the SC thread, but I have to say, I think I found "IT." The HBP-1 is very sterile sounding; it has no overdrive/dirt capability at all...not even a little...but OMG...can you say "warm piano tone?" Notes just RING and it "feels" organic , if that makes sense. It's a big, round, warm sound, and that's with all the twiddly knobs flat. I only have one bass w/me right now; my Ash-bodied, SX Jazz. And I'm playing through a TB110 little ported cab. (I'm a club member :D) Can't wait to play my Warmoth Jazz with EMG's and Avatar 212 through it!

The parametric EQ on this thing is so flexible, it's scary. Most parametric tweaking (IME) with the SC resulted in "Well I hear the difference but I don't like it." With the HBP-1, the tweaking results in "OH, I hear what that did...that's sort of the tone from "that song"...don't want that right now...gotta tweak some more." I completely understand we're talking about two different products from two very different price ranges here. I get it. Also, the HBP-1 is a dedicated bass pre, whereas the SC is a MIC pre that can be utilized for pretty much anything (that's why I bought it.)

My pedalboard (where I get my "dirt") is in transit also. I essentially like a 70's Ampeg type tone for most things, but want the capability to do other things too. If I can get some "dirt" or "hair" (just a little) and somehow add it to the "piano tone" without changing the fundamental tone of the pre, my SC will be up for sale. Sorry for the thread derail :(. I haven't posted anything about the Demeter yet...I've had no time to do anything close to a "review." Heck, I had the pre shipped to the hotel I was living in before I found a place to live! Hotel walls are really thin...the guy upstairs banged on my door at 11:00PM on a Saturday to say "Sounds great...and why are you playing that in a hotel room? Nevermind...I can hear it....knock it off!" :D

Wow...it all just came out in this thread. Sorry for the derail. I look forward to comparing these two rigs. I still will use the settings pointed out previously in this thread. I just couldn't figure out how to get a great tone (IMO) out of the SC. I know it's in there somewhere.

The SC is a decent piece of equipment, and I have gotten pretty good tone out of it. But it's still just a $300 mic channel strip. There are much better preamps. $300 is about the lowest you're gonna find a "new" channel strip for, so that's something to take into consideration for anyone who is considering purchasing it.

Don't get me wrong - I like mine. ;)

There's 3 preamps on my todo list.

Which ever one comes along when I have the cash I'll jump it.

Aguilar DB659, Phil Jones P-1, and the Demeter HBP-1...

Should work perfectly!

That will be a kick ass combo!@!

Thanks SUPERTANKER, you were correct this preamp/amp combo was plenty loud enough for me. I play with 3 guitarist, all have 300 watt tubes. No problem at all. I did use your settings as a starting point. I adjusted the EQ a little and had to bump the gain up a tad. Besides that..... for its first 4 hour practice, it played like a champ. I think I will be happy for what I have into it.

That's what's up!

Don't be afraid to experiment with it.
Get in there and turn some knobs!
Invest a few bucks in a tube swap, you'll love it!

Enjoy!

I was going to put a new tube in it. Any suggestions? I popped the top off. The circuit board that the tube is attached to, looks kind of scary with my big dumb hands. Does the tube just pull straight out? Man I would hate to snap that off by accident. Thanks for all your posts.

It's easier than changing a light bulb.

It pulls straight out, no twisting.

The sky's the limit as far as tubes go.
I would start with a $20 tube and see if you like the change.

Anything on this page:
12AX7 / ECC83 / 7025 / CV4004 Tube Types

I have a NOS 12AX7WA in mine that cost about $50.00.

I have had 4 different tubes in mine and each of them was an improvement over stock...

Support the components (board & tube) with both hands to avoid placing unwanted stress on either. Gently "rock" the tube back 'n forth...just a smidgen...while removing the tube from the socket. Don't rush as you may cause damage. Same holds true when re-inserting the new tube.

That being said, the Presonus is a starved plate configuration and I did not see any discernible improvement when "rolling glass" through mine.

***!
Why would it make a difference at all, its not like the tube actually works at the plate voltage available, its just there as an ornament.
18 Volts with the best will in the world is not going to float a 12ax7's boat. try a bit closer to 300 volts and get back to me with the results.
By the way this is what a real one looks like:

Reassuringly expensive isn't it.:bassist:

This thread, which happens to be my thread, is about the Presonus Studio Channel.

If you have one, want one, had one, or wish to discuss your experiences with that unit or COMPARABLE units you are welcome here.

Otherwise, start your own thread...

Nobody in their right mind would slep around a $5000 preamp to bar gigs.

Nobody would attempt to compare a $5000 preamp to a $200 preamp.
Except you.

I think you're missing the point...
The future of high end recording, if there is any, depends on real world comparisons with like products. I think this is an audio product containing a pre amp a compressor and an eq therefore it should be judged as such, it might be relevant to discuss its weight if it had some special use in a weight critical application, like ballooning, it doesn't so what will we judge it on. What about as to weather its description as having a tube pre amp isn't a bit of a total porky actually.
I don't do bar gigs but if I did I doubt I would deliberatly sound worse just because the money was poor.
Nothing matters but the sound in my book.
Its my Job!:hiding:
