Presonus Studio Studio Channel Preamp

The future of high end recording, if there is any, depends on real world comparisons with like products. I think this is an audio product containing a pre amp a compressor and an eq therefore it should be judged as such, it might be relevant to discuss its weight if it had some special use in a weight critical application, like ballooning, it doesn't so what will we judge it on. What about as to weather its description as having a tube pre amp isn't a bit of a total porky actually.
I don't do bar gigs but if I did I doubt I would deliberatly sound worse just because the money was poor.
Nothing matters but the sound in my book.
Its my Job!:hiding:

Like I said, you're missing the point.
These are not like products when one cost 25 times more than the other.
The Presonus Studio Channel is NOT the future of high end recording.
Every assertion you have made here is INCORRECT!

Feel free to start your own thread.

Otherwise you're just a troll!
And will be dealt with as such...

Thanks!

JJ 12ax7 tubes have fantastic tone for bass guitar. If you go NOS then you're going to have to experiment.

I have to disagree with you Bassmec, I build low voltage (18v) single and dual tube overdrive pedals. There is a difference in sound between tubes, even at 18v. I have experimented with about 10 different NOS and current production tubes, and I use NOS Sylvania 12AU7s because they sound best in my pedals.

Well my Studio Channel has cleared customs and should arrive tomorrow (Thanks Zooberworx!!)

I am getting this primarily to use in my IEM rig as a pre for my bass with a powered monitor for a bit of stage level for the other in the band without IEM's.

If I really like the SC I may start using it as part of my rig also - which would mean I would need a pwoer amp to run it with.

What are some of the Power amps you guys are using with the Studio Channel, and which of these do you recommend?

Crown xls1000 or 1500 is one that springs to mind that might work for me.

Congrats on the new Presonus, Rocksolid! The SC is a tweaker's dream; you can get a lot of different sounds out of it.

We just moved into a new house so I've been busy unpacking and moving furniture around; haven't had time to try the settings suggested a couple of pages back. But I'd suggest to you to try them out as a starting point. The guys suggesting the settings have lots of experience w/this box. Hope that made sense!

Just thought I would post a pic of my IEM rig with my Studio Channel.

Thanks to those who answered my questions, and to people who post their findings on all sorts of products which helps people like me research threads to work out what I want/need.

Vu meter is a bit sticky - it doesn't always return to it's home position, regardless of if it is supposed to be showing output or Gain reduction. Has anyone else had this and if so, was it simple to fix? This could be an issue that has evolved due to being shipped half way around the world.

Instrument input seems noisy with my passive J bass but fine with my Reggie hamilton PJ5 - I need to investigate this further and sort it out as the Insrument input is noticably hotter than the rear input when using my J bass.

I'm running the Tube drive at about 50% - it seems to be a good spot with the set up I have.

I'm looking forward to using it live. It achieved my number one goal which was to give me a good sounding line level signal to drive the powered monitor I use on stage for a bit of sound reinforcement and so others on stage can still hear me.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this set up and if you have any suggestions.

Basically, it goes:

Rack tuner > Studio Channel > Rolls PM351 (on top of the rack)

PM351 receives the FOH mix from the desk, and it has a thru for my mic. I mix my vocals and bass dominant to the FOH mix and then it goes:

PM351 > Presonus Blue Max Compressor > channel 2 of the eq > IEM system.

Channel 1 of the eq is in the side chain of the Compressor to create compression where I want it most.

Let us know what you think when you get to play out.

I played with a blues group this past weekend and my rig was sounding exceptionally choice!

My jazz bass was thick, chewy, punchy and growly.
I bounced the band like a basketball.

I could easily hear everything I did, chords, runs, slaps, pops all sounded perfect!

OK so I've been thinking about one of these for a while, maybe a year or so. After reading the 12 pages of reviews here I figured I would get one. Finally gathered up some gear collecting dust and took it in to the local GC and traded it on a used one. They're shipping it to my house, I should have it early next week. I demo'd one in the store, and although it wasn't an ideal setup it sounded pretty damn good. The EQ was pretty flexible, and the rest i can touch up with my sonic max. I'll let you guys know what I think about it when I get a chance to do a full demo with it.

Supertanker, in your honor I'm going to throw a JJ 12AX7 in there. I know even low voltage tube circuits can sound different with different tubes, because I build them.

I've done a couple of gigs with the SC now and I'm really happy with it. The signal coming into both the Yamaha MSR400 I am using for a stage monitor and also into my IEM system is strong and full. the Tube drive doesn't seem to have massive amount of impact - running at about 50% works for me, giving a bit more girth to the tone and certainly it changes the MSR400 from sounding a little on the brittle side to nice and rounded.

I am using the xlr output to feed my PM351 and in turn the PA - I am using a balanced TRS to xlr lead to feed my stage monitor. I read somewhere earlier in this thread that someone had concerns about using the TRS socket to feed their power amp? No need for concern if you use the correct lead.

I did try using the rear input jack - but that just seems to rob your tone of high end sparkle. The front input jack is the go for all basses both passive and active.

I did have some issues with my VU meter sticking - this is no longer an issue. I took the lid off the SC to look inside and there was electrical tape around the VU meter that had gone very tacky. I'm not sure why it was there? The only reason I can think of was to stop light bleed from the VU meter to the comp/eq and eq bypass switches - since taking the tape off the VU meter these now have a dark green glow to them and then go red when activated.

I took delivery of my 1964ears.com remolds of my UE TF10 earphones this week - I can't emphasize how good these sound. My IEM rig with the SC was good b4, but sounds even better now with these custom fit earphones. I can't wait for the next gig to give this rig another run properly.

The Studio Channel may not be the most sophisticated and high end piece of gear around but when you pick one up 2nd hand for under $200 delivered to Australia and it has a tube pre, good compressor, and para eq in it - well that is pretty amazing if you ask me. Just my dbx160A compressor cost me over 2x that.

The next pre on my list is a Sansamp RPM - gas, gas, gas...

That's about what I paid for mine.

I put about 4 hours of playing in with a blues group yesterday.
So Phat in the mixxxxx!
It's never sounded better.

I couldn't be happier...
