I acknowledge and respect the man's talent. He was musically brilliant. No doubt about it. It's a tragedy that he passed. A lot of people are mourning and it's really sad he's gone.

His music.....maybe there's something I'm missing. It seems to be mostly 80s style, electronic-ey, drum machine-y pop music. That's fine. Lots of people love that. I'm not a fan. Not of that kind of music in general and not of the Prince songs I know. I'm not trying to disrespect his memory or his talent or his vast catalogue of music. Not at all. I'm trying to understand it. I know he was a great musician but I don't hear it in his music...at least the music I know. Are there deep tracks that are.......better? No, better isn't the right word. But different from how I described how I perceive his music. Is there more funky stuff he's done? More rock and roll?

It sounds like you answered your question. Prince was a great musician, but he did not play music you liked.

Alex Webster and Steve Giorgio are great bassists who play Death Metal, and I can only take so much Death Metal. That's life.

I did, but is there stuff he's done that's different from what plays on the radio? Songs or an album that's not in his normal style?

As a musician I have a great deal of respect for Prince. I think he was immensely talented and I love the way he played guitar (rhythm especially) and bass. As a listener I like some of his stuff but find that most of it (of the stuff I've heard, at least) leaves me feeling indifferent. I will say, however, that seeing Prince live was something else and it makes me sad to think I'll never be able to do that again. The man was an incredible showman.

Nobody is going to sway you about liking his music. Yes, if you listen to some of the non-hit songs from his albums (I'd suggest "Strollin'" from Diamond and Pearls), there's some really good and diverse stuff. If there was ever anyone who could merge funk/rock/pop effectively and still sound like himself, Prince was it.

I picked that 3-CD set of One Night Alone...Live! a few years back. It was not cheap...I looked at what people are now asking. Ouch.

Same, too, for the Live At The Alladin, Las Vegas DVD. Coulda been had at Best Buy for under $10 a few years ago. No mas.
Those looking for some entry into Prince...I would recommend checking out any youtube vids of this concert.
I re-visited the 1st 30 minutes yesterday. Great stuff! He's entertaining, funny, cool, plays his ass off & all with a killer band behind him.
