Prince's music

My one and only problem with Prince was that I could never find him on YouTube. I was asked to learn some of his songs, so I wanted to get an idea who he was. I guess I missed the boat. I do understand, to a point, why he wasn't on YouTube; protecting his music and all. Still, as someone who never really saw who he was, it might have been nice if he had posted even just a couple videos or let one person do it. Not being able to see who he was, I simply lost interest and moved on.

Now, since his passing, I have seen a few videos. Cool show! He was an entertainer, for sure.

I really like the poppy, funky NPG era, I think for one summer in the mid to late 90's that's about all I listened to. Prince, like Miles, could really put together a band, there's so much incredibly cool playing on his records. But if you weren't into him in the 80's then into the 90's when he became The Artist, I could see not ever really connecting with his music. I think his passing is a big shock because it shows someone larger than life really wasn't, and he wasn't very old which is disturbing to those of us who spent a bunch of years listening to him, plus he was still in top form until just a few weeks ago.

I love that while absolutely everyone else moaned about how the internet ruined their sales, Prince found a way to beat that system and still sell records. To my knowledge, he's the only artist who has done so.

Nobody is going to sway you about liking his music. Yes, if you listen to some of the non-hit songs from his albums (I'd suggest "Strollin'" from Diamond and Pearls), there's some really good and diverse stuff. If there was ever anyone whole could merge funk/rock/pop effectively and still sound like himself, Prince was it.
Definitely the song that stands out, it's so different from the rest of the songs in that album, sounds jazzy to me while the rest is synth.

I acknowledge and respect the man's talent. He was musically brilliant. No doubt about it. It's a tragedy that he passed. A lot of people are mourning and it's really sad he's gone.

His music.....maybe there's something I'm missing. It seems to be mostly 80s style, electronic-ey, drum machine-y pop music. That's fine. Lots of people love that. I'm not a fan. Not of that kind of music in general and not of the Prince songs I know. I'm not trying to disrespect his memory or his talent or his vast catalogue of music. Not at all. I'm trying to understand it. I know he was a great musician but I don't hear it in his music...at least the music I know. Are there deep tracks that are.......better? No, better isn't the right word. But different from how I described how I perceive his music. Is there more funky stuff he's done? More rock and roll?
I respect him more as an amazing lead guitarist than anything .. well, that and we both share an uncommon love of androgeny and the color purple. I think most of the people he moved musically are those that really like to dance, and appreciate a little less testosterone with their music. I went with a girlfriend back on 2000 to see him live, and it really was a great show ... musically and performance wise. Not my usual cup of tea, either, but he did have a lot of talent and a unique image

Prince's big gift wasn't that he was the most innovative when it comes to reinventing music, but he could write really good songs that people love, play any rhythm section instrument well, and he could produce his ass off and outlast anyone in the studio. I am not the world's biggest Prince fan, but I will certainly give him much respect.

Pretty much on the same page. I always respected the talent but never really got into the music.

HOWEVER, now that I'm being made to learn a couple Prince tunes for my cover band; I'm enjoying it from a bass playing perspective.

I'm the same - Prince, Bowie, etc - just about all the late 70's and 80's people except for SRV - I can appreciate their talent but I don't dig the music. IMO Nirvana and company turned back the clock to the rough and tumble feel of the 60's and that was a very good thing.

I feel the same way about his music - there are several songs that I like, but I don't jump up and down when I hear his music. However, I have watched several videos where he plays guitar, and his soloing is insane. That man can play the F out of a guitar. Plus, he's a multi-instrumentalist, and a brilliant songwriter. All in all, a very well-rounded musician. I was lucky enough to spend time with Andrew Gouche, his final bass player in the NPG, and Andrew had some great stories about Prince. Apparently, Charlie Murphy's story is 100% correct; Prince was an amazing basketball player, too. I respect the talent, even if I'm not playing his albums 24/7.

Not only that, but Prince's late bodyguard Chick Huntsberry once said he'd seen Prince kick the crap out of dudes twice as big as he was. I believe it...someone that quick and wiry probably could do a number on you.
