Jason Newsted is a very good bassist. Otherwise they would not have hired him. duh.

granted most of the stuff he played on sucked, but remember, while there are 4 sucky albums with his name on them, he has played "master of puppets" live around a thousand times.

and even he says the next bass player should be Mike Inez.

and i'm positive it won't be les claypool. les auditioned in 1986 for metallice pre-primus, and was beat out by newsted. apparently the band rejected him for being "too good"......

Notice these are some of their best songs Fade to Black, Call of Ktulu, Orion, Master of Puppets, etc...

Enter Sandman could use some audible base, it would really add to a great song.


Jason had two very good reasons for leaving:

1. Metallica was corrupting him with their greed for money and hatred of many fans, as someone said,
and
2. He said he "felt constricted" playing Metallica, in other words he was unable to be a driving force in the band, couldn't play a lead role, and wasn't allowed to play better stuff.

I hear he joined up with two kids in a small band with less pressure and greed.

If you can get the Motorhead version of "Enter Sandman" you can hear the bass much better. Even though this has no signifcance to this thread, Lemmy Kilmeister is a great bassist. I think that Jason Newsted was/is a great player. If you have a chance to get some of his solos they are awesome. The one he does in Mexico is good. I hope that he does well in his next band. I think that he couldn't stand James or Lars anymore that's why he quit. The neck injuries were just icing on the cake. Because in interviews after he left he never mentions his feelings toward them. Obviously it was not a good break up.

Not strictly true. One of Jason's good friends is a 13-year old "Boy wonder" guitarist, who plays with his younger brother as a drummer. Jason thought it would be fun to contribute a few bass lines to the boys' recording.

A lot of metallica fans have given him stick for this, as apparently, a guy isn't allowed to do a nice thing for some kids anymore.

Note these were the same fans who like "ReLoad". Nuff said.

I personally as rather dissapointed with "I Dissappear". The intro sounded cool, but as soon as the verse came in and there was that E,E,E,E,E,G,G figure, I just thought "Cliff would be ashamed".

Not Jason's fault obviously. He rarely gets a chance to show off his songwriting skills. Had he managed to get past the impregnable fortress of Hetfield/ Ulrich, I doubt Metallica would have gotten as bad as the did.

well actually Jason got through to James during Load and ReLoad. Actually, James changed the guitar in some songs because he loved the lines that Jason would come up with but they maybe wouldn't go as well. And I saw earlier on here that James is going to play or bob is going to play bass on the album and that's wrong. The power trio said theirself that they are going to record all but thebass then get a bassist, and he'll record.

i vote for other because metallica should go there other ways as in far away from music. They each need to do what jason did and take there 3 or 4 dollars they have left and find a new band or new day job. i mean there should be a retirement time for band like when you start just makeing music for money and saying F*** your fans. I would also be dissipointed if KRIST not Kris joined Metallica because why would you wanna join a band all about selling out when your last band was totaly against it.

just my oppinion and if you have a problem with it IM me and we can get in some pointless debate about why you think you right and i'm wrong. It will be fun

Well,

first my .02 about metallica:

I believe Metallica are a piece of music history - because they where the band that made heavy metal well known - I still remember when the S&M Album hit the Number 1 spot over here in germany, just because of Nothing Else Matters.

Although I enjoyed Cliffs Basslines very much (take Seek and Destroy as an example...), I like Jasons lines a bit more. Because they are more practical, when a song is in A minor - why do you have to play a A Minor Pentatonic Scale (or whatever) at the begining - instead of playing A and maybe playing some harmonics ?
And I feel inspired by Jason more than by anyone else in the whole world, as he was the one who got me to play bass...

For me - it would be great if no one else then JOHN MYUNG would go with Metallica. Because that would be great for Metallica - but who would be in Dream Theater (my new favourite band) instead of him ? Jason ? hehehehe...


But we should all like Jason because he shares a love for something with us : BASSES ! (He has a collection of about 80 basses)...

Cliff was credited with bringing melodic lines to Metallica a'la orion. Great Bass players both Jason and Cliff. I would suggest that the replace Jason with a trigger on Lars's Kick drum MIDI keyed to whatever key the song is in. Or just buy Kirk an octave pedal and drop the upper octave. I am looking forward to hearing Jasons solo project. And I would like to be the first to suggest a tour. John Paul Jones, Jason's new band, and one or 2 more "lead bass" players. How long before we have a band with more then one bass player?

for one thing, if you were a hardcore metallica fan like me you would know that Les already tried out for them and they turned him down because he cant play metal so his basslines would sound like pudding. know There was one reply that said they should have changed the metallica name after cliff died because bands should do that if someone dies or leaves well, what about Ron and Dave? Dave ****in wrote the four horseman and called it mechanix just listen to it on the no life till leather demo and then listen to it on megadeths first album, same damn thing. but heres food for thought, i want your thoughts of what you think it would sound like if ****in geezer butler ****in played for metallica. i think it would sound good just very fuzzy.
