This is not always true for Apple Applications and hardware, nor strictly true in this case, it was acquired and redeveloped.
True, (I was using the Emagic versions of Logic way before Apple took over so I remember the older versions well) - but given that Apple more or less re-designed or at least optimised Logic from the ground up, and it has been designed by Apple to run on Apple machines, it's a no brainer as far as I'm concerned if you're looking for trouble free recording in an Apple Mac environment.
There are - and always will be - minor glitches and problems with all the big guns - Protools, Cubase, Digital Performer, etc all have their occasional hiccups, but that is not surprising, given that these applications have become so many things to so many different people and situations. There are endless ways to record, arrange, compose and perform with these applications, and these apps have to be able to deal with any and all situations. Photoshop has the same issues when it comes to graphics - 99.9% of users use it with no issues and never even notice the glitches, but something inevitably always comes up - and then gets fixed in future updates. It's just the transient nature of software, and it's still a small price to pay for having an entire studio in a tiny box that you can carry around with you wherever you go.
From my experience, the latest versions of Logic - from a bass player's point of view anyway - have all worked like a dream. Recording is great, arranging is easy, the presets are simple and sound good, the Jam packs are fun and inspiring, and most importantly, the Flex polyphonic mode has the best time-stretching algorithms I've ever heard anywhere.
Even the built in Bass Amp plug-in sounds pretty good in a mix.
Also, as far as USB vs FW is concerned - in my experience, FW is a lot less reliable than USB, and there are NO issues whatsoever with USB latency - my Motu Microbook USB interface works like a dream, whereas my old Alesis IO14 FW interface was an absolute joke. It crashed daily, it messed with the FW settings on my Mac regularly, and the sound quality was inferior to the Motu. It was enough to put me off using FW interfaces ever again. (just my experience - YMMV.)
