I got a 15 watt acoustic practice amp when I first started for $80. Its pretty perfect for low volume anything. It can kick out some nice tube sounding growl too. Of course you should probably save up for a better amp if you plan on gigging but I still use my small amp over my GK at home.

Probably a stupid question... earphones direct into active bass?

In the very early 90s Carvin used their very loud active preamps as a marketing ploy as a "built in headphone amp" on their then-new LB bass series. If you got a mono/stereo plug you were in like Flynn. I used to use it to practice on tour busses with this arrangement.I was fooling around and wondered if anything useful would happen when I plugged my earphones (sony MDR-XD200) directly into my bass, with the active pre-amp turned on.
To my surprise, I do actually hear the bass in the earphones. It doesn't sound amazing (actually it doesn't sound very good at all), though I don't know whether that's cos my "trick" is ill-advised, or because I'm just not very good yet.
I don't hear of folks plugging their phones direct into their bass though. I know that usually they plug into the amp instead.
But I haven't got one yet. £350 takes a few weeks of saving.
Can I get away with doing this for a while?

Right. Enough people seem to rave about the B1on. I've had a look, and it looks pretty cool, if a bit "what does all that stuff mean?" to a new bassist. I heard one guy said he got the b1on and regretted not getting the B1XON (I'm gonna send these guys an email and ask if the guy who names their products is a fourteen year old script kiddie 
) so I've ordered a B1X0N(OMGWTFBBQetc) and a rather shiny 6 meter (why?) blue 1/4 - 1/4 guitar lead .
I'm a little bummed that my amp will be delayed, but on the other hand, the bricky (I'm just gonna call it a bricky from now on) will keep me entertained until I can afford the amp. By which time I should be able to play consecutive notes on more than two strings without hurting myself.
ALSO! My Planet Lock strap arrived, and a cleverly designed little thing it is!
AND: My tuner (always handy to have one even if the bricky has one too) - a Snark SN-2 (The yamaha one I ordered was out of stock so they said "why not have an SN2 instead?" and my skillbook have been shipped too.
I suspect I've just been attacked by GAS. I can feel it clawing at my mind like the dark side of the force

I think you'll like that pedal. I have the Zoom B3 and I use it live and for recording. Learn a couple of scales, start the drum machine on the pedal, and go to town.
I suggest taking some of the free lessons at TalkingBass.net. They will give you a really good head start on your learning.
I've got this Invalid Link Removed one and I am very impressed, just get a nice par of headphones too...

Mine arrives tomorrow after exchanging the B1on. I think you will like it - they really packed a lot in for the money! Be sure and download the effects list from the Zoom website. It shows all the options for each of the effects used in the patches.
It really is a lot of fun to go through the patches and hear how how they got that sound - for example - listen to Yes -"Starship Trooper" and then try patch F0 (firmware 1.21) - then look at the setting for each effect in the chain. This is why I think this device is a great value. It helps teach what each style of pedal does and how they interact.

The pedal arrived today. I'm glad I spent the $20 extra on the exchange for the expression pedal. This thing really is a blast to play with and I'm sure I will spend 10-100s of hours with it. I just went through all 100 patches and tried the P pickup, the J pickup, up on the neck, down on the neck on every patch. I heard tones from many songs and it was a lot of "a hah" moments. Zoom has set up all the effect that don't have a parametric effect to use the pedal as volume. Nice touch and I believe you can change that within each patch.
I did the mod by adding some dense foam in the cavity cut out of the pedal but cut it about 2-3mm shorter than the surrounding foam so you have to give it a bit of a press to activate the switch. When you see it you will understand.
Be sure and calibrate the pedal first thing by holding down the menu button when you plug in the input cable. Mine was way off but the stock tension is set almost perfect.
This device is really is a bargain! I know this is a "training wheels" pedal but I'm truly thrilled and that does not happen much with my purchases.
I would pay $10-20 more if they would:
1) Enable computer patch management
2) Enable recording out of the USB

I was fooling around and wondered if anything useful would happen when I plugged my earphones (sony MDR-XD200) directly into my bass, with the active pre-amp turned on.
To my surprise, I do actually hear the bass in the earphones. It doesn't sound amazing (actually it doesn't sound very good at all), though I don't know whether that's cos my "trick" is ill-advised, or because I'm just not very good yet.
I don't hear of folks plugging their phones direct into their bass though. I know that usually they plug into the amp instead.
But I haven't got one yet. £350 takes a few weeks of saving
Can I get away with doing this for a while?
Well I had an inexpensive but decent quality and small Behringer 4 channel mixing bd. Plug in bass and listen through the head phone out. Works fine + you can plug in a CD player and jamb along or plug in an out from the computer and play with anything from U-Tube including lessons. Try E-bay for $50.00 you'll find something for sure.
Might feel like a "training wheel" device, given its construction and materials used, but it can sound very convincing; I'm gonna try it live gigging, might even consider buying a spare one just in case.
Agreed about managing patches on the computer, maybe something along the lines of what TC does with its Toneprint editor?
