Problem: Ampeg 6X10 --> replace w/ JBL's?

Thanks for your responses. I was looking at the eminence speakers and I was wondering if they would help or fix the problem and if they (specifically the legend B102) would work with my 610 cabinet. -it's rated at 8 ohms impedance and handles 200W. Thanks.

They would, and I ran my SVT-CL/6x10 with BP102's for a while, but the issue is that the replacements are 8 ohm while the original speakers in the cab are 6 ohm allowing for a 4 ohm 6x10. With 8 ohm replacement speakers you're looking at 5.3 ohm load. I was advised by ampeg tech service that it was koser to run 5.3 set on 4, but not the best thing to do.

Do you have the bass boost button on? Are you using an active bass/a lot of effect? Seriously you should't be bottoming out this cab.

Hi.

Has the cab always acted this way?

Is there a possibility the cab was serviced at some point and one or more of the speakers had the wires reversed, putting them out of phase. A 9V battery test will reveal that.

The head is powerful, but with Your setup, it shouldn't fart too easily.

Regards
Sam

OK - I have used the 610 with a 4-Pro head for a while and I KNOW those speakers can take evil power if it is clean.

So - the first qusetion - is your cab a USA or VIET unit? If the former you are dong something wrong and if the latter it is the speakers.

Eminence is the source of replacement. They have a wide line and you need talk to their tech suport to get the right ones.

If you are pushing that tube head to some level of distortion - that will eat speakers. If you want that midrange grindy sound you may be better off with 15s. Ten inch speakers are a bit more scooped din the sound.

My 2 cents.

I'm not worried as much about loudness as I am about it not farting out. Would the higher wattage ratings help that problem or is it the same answer? Thanks.
Wattage ratings have no bearing on farting out. That happens when the driver excursion limit is reached. The only driver that probably has longer excursion than the Ampeg/Eminence OEM driver is the Eminence BP 102, but it has lower midrange output. Replacing your drivers is a crapshoot at best. Taking your entire rig into a well stocked music store to try other cab options would be better.
