Lookin' into getting one of my basses stripped and repainted/refinished.
I'm not sure how to find someone that could do that, or how much that would cost.
And what would be my general investment if I wanted to do it myself?
If it's a Fender bolt-on, I can recommend Mark Jenny.
You can see the refinish he did for my '65 Precision Invalid Link Removed. Cost me about $275 in 2006, though I stripped and sanded the body myself. That saved me another $75.
Wow this is a timely thread, I was just wondering the same thing. I have a '71 Precision body that I stripped to bare wood years ago with intention of having it refinished and after browsing the Orange basses thread I'm thinking I should actually have it done, in some shade of orange of course. Unfortunately the wood is plain jane, the bass was originally black so I think I'll have to go with an opague finish.
What type of bass are you getting refinished? I had a 1964 fender jazz bass that had a terrible refin when I bought it. I had it brought back to it's original sunburst finish by alleva coppola in NYC. They did an amazing job. I posted a pic of it just today. The thread is in this forum under "Where to re-refinish a 64 Fender jazz bass?". The pic I posted isn't great, but they didn't an amazing job, putting it back to it's original three tone sunburst. I can't recall what I paid for it, but it was worth every cent.
I guess it would depend on what kind of finish you want.
My guitarist let his buddy paint his old gibson and he's going to have it professionally spayed with a nice, thick clear poly. I'd recommend that option if you're looking for a very specific custom job.
If you DIY with ReRanch I find it would cost about $200 when all said & done. It can take several months to do- depending on weather conditions & drying time.
