I was going to make the Nick Burns reference too. I pretty much refer to all IT guys as "Nick Burns". Some get it some don't.
Anyway, on topic. I know a few writers who cover politics from inside the beltway if not the White House itself and they are pretty uppity for some reason
Sounds like a guy my father backed years ago. A steel guitarist my dad was working with got them in on a pick-up band deal for a gig backing this dude who played rythmn guitar and sang at wedding gigs. The guy introduced himself to my father as "Johnny Star." Who the **** calls himself "Johnny Star," especially when they are just a wedding singer in Podunk? According to my dad, his guitar skills were nonexistent and he was a mediocre singer.
My guitarist has a drummer friend who played in a Poison tribute band for a short period of time. One time he called the singer to talk band business. The singer's wife answered the phone and the drummer asked if he could speak to the singer, using the singer's real name. The singer insisted that he be referred to as "Brett" when conducting band business over the phone.

I would have called him random variations forever after that...

Today I went to get a spark plug, the one I brought in to reference was really corroded. The guy helping me was cool, but this other employee was like, "I bet thats from a 1970s Lawn Boy." No, it is from a moped. "A SLOWped huh?" (laughing at his own joke). Then he saw an old camaro IROC across the road and yelled out, "Hey theres an 'I used to rock'." I am in IT myself, and I would consider myself fairly egotistical . I actually really try to avoid making people feel stupid, sometimes it just kind of happens. Sometimes in IT you can't help but get upset, like when you drive 3 hours to plug a printer into the wall after you asked them twice to check the cables.
The most egotistical people in my circle of friends are most of the ones who have graduate degrees, especially doctorates in non-medical fields, especially Theology, Bible, Psychology...I just tell em, listen, stop being such a prick, it is not everyone's fault that you went to school for so long and your still an idiot.

I'm in IT (well kind of) to and I feel you, this is only a summer job and I can't even count the number of times stuff that was unplugged, people that didn't knew what the hell was going on because their windows were downsized, the number of computer I had to disinfect due to people clicking crap like wowomgfreemusic.whatevs, etc.

And I hear ya on trying not to make people feel dumb. One (or at least I do) tends to assume that people at-large have a certain basic level of knowledge. This is typically related to your field. For example: I tend to assume that most people have a basic understanding of algebra/geometry/Newtonian physics. This assumption is utterly wrong, but one tends to develop that assumption when he spends several years in a population where that is the norm (college).
Earlier in the thread, some had mentioned that they think engineers are egotistical and I can see where one might get that impression. Most engineering disciplines are specialized and heavy on the jargon which makes it intimidating to outsiders. Plus, we get excited when anyone will listen to us talk about work for more than 30 seconds
IMO/IME, as an engineer who is married to yet another engineer we are pretty easy to get along with in a work environment. Good call, that really sums it up, post-grad degrees in any such fields...they do seem to have chips on their shoulders, probably because their whole degree is based on trying to prove the ideas they have that aren't provable.
I must be in bad shape then, because I'm a law school professor and administrator, with an undergraduate degree in Religious Studies!
I guess it's good I focused on Buddhism.Professors have been mentioned a lot in this thread, but very few of my colleagues have big egos. Almost all of them are extremely down to earth and care about the students, but it was different where I went to school. Most professors were cool, but quite a few had monster egos, so I've definitely seen the phenomenon.
It's really not the jargon - at least for me because I can keep up with them. My issue with engineers (especially engineering students) is that most of them honestly believe that they are smarter (and by extension, better) than most other people.
Truth of the matter is that they're not smarter, they just possess different skill sets. But then again, I'm sure they need to tell themselves they're better than others because most of them have almost no social lives and they seem depressed all the time (or at least the students seem that way).
Agreed. But there are quite a few self-proclaimed engineers on this forum who are no different than those students. They still have the egotistical, self-righteous attitude where they think they are better and smarter than everyone else when they aren't.
Surgeons are at the top, but oil company engineers (especially newly hired) are pretty obnoxious as well. Writers and independent coffee/music shop owners are the most elitist, though.
