I grew up around pilots - real, actual, we fly the damned thing pilots. Best people I ever met, nice as could be, funny, helpful, smart, and just generally good people. The jerks (and like any group of people, there are indeed jerks in a crowd of 'em) tend to get run off by the rest of them.

I think that the almost to-a-man (and woman) over-the-top sarcastic sense of humor I ran into with them is lost on some people though, and they take it seriously...I'm guessing that may be the case here...

Hmm. I'm actually friends with a lot of the pilots that work for Fedex and they all are really great guys.

I agree. The high finance guys are in another league, and I've met a few. Interestingly, though, one of the most successful grew up in a small town, and seems relatively down to earth despite the eight figure earnings. The dude hired Los Lobos to play his wedding, which at least shows great musical taste.

Politicians are up there too, but not all are egomaniacs, and I've met some including former NYC mayor Ed Koch, VP Joe Biden, and Philly mayor Michael Nutter. Mayor Nutter is a really cool, low key guy, and doesn't seem like an egomaniac at all. Our previous mayor, Ed Rendell, could break the needle right off the ego-meter! He was awesome though.

I would have to say actORs (as they say it). The caveat here is that the ego is usually bigger in the less successful of them, or those whose careers peaked some time ago (at any level), and those who dine out on past successes. One bit part in a TV series, or advert, and suddenly they're asking, "Don't you know who I am?"
(answer: "Someone who dresses up and pretends?") and wanting free/heavily discounted stuff.

The bigger, more successful of them tend to hit a certain level of humble at some point. Funny how that happens.

That's a great one that I totally wouldn't of thought of. A lot of them take their job waaay too seriously, but I guess it's just their way of being competitive since, let's face it, most of them definitely weren't the sports types back in high school or college.

It definitely seems like it. I love the pilots who I know. They all are a bunch of outgoing and funny people who just like having a good time.

Doctors. I always feel like they're talking down to me because I couldn't possibly understand them if they used adult words all while looking at me like I'm some new and mildly interesting strain of bacterium.

Or maybe it's just me.
