Prog Inqueries

Definitely check out:
De-Loused In the Comatorium - The Mars Volta
Frances the Mute - The Mars Volta

I can't really put them into a box and say they're "prog" but if you are a fan of music you should get a good listen out of them, I mean they do have movements and all but I wouldn't really say its just prog, I really don't like putting them in a genre at all really, its just music.

And I'd listen to Aural Moon Prog Radio, you can hear it on Itunes or just do an internet search for prog radio. They play alot of good stuff I've never heard and don't really feel like taking the time to buy or download.

I don't listen to that much prog, but Voivod is very cool. It's been said, but RIP Piggy, a great guitarist. Also, some of Death's stuff is progressive. Go buy 'Individual Thought Patterns', 'The Sound of Perseverence', 'Symbolic', and 'Human', all of them great albums (with some killer fretless playing on 'ITP' and 'Human').

And I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Liquid Tension Experiment. Awesome instrumental progressive rock/metal. Only made two albums, and both are totally self-indulgent, to the extreme. Tony Levin on bass, which is always a good thing.

This cd is hit-or-miss w/ me. Some songs are beautiful, some just sound like crap.

That's what I love about the album... the beauty mixed with what you'd call crap... I call weird as hell. They sound like nothing else when they really get going. The singer sounds like he's from another planet, they are just really out there.

"As I carry you to your grave, my arms your hearse"

Greatest lyric ever!

First, I have no idea what qualifies as "prog" today. I am an old guy, and tend to associate this term with old music. That having been said, King Crimson in all its phases starts things off. The latest studio effort, Power to Believe, is great, and might still qualify as prog according to some.

Van der Graff Generator's Pawn Hearts is the gold standard, I think. I understand they recently reunited for an album, but I don't know much about it. Peter Hammill's solo work is also well worth it.

Gentle Giant +1

No one has mentioned Public Foot the Roman.

These may be a bit more metal than rock (with a few exceptions), but still. Andromeda (the latest cd, II=I), Pain of Salvation (Check out a song on their first album (Entropia) called People Passing By. Incredibly cool bassline :D), and second you on the Opeth, Spastic Ink, Bubblemath (This band is SO great, they've really inspired me alot (:)... I'll edit the post if I can think of more. But definetly check out Bubblemath and Pain of Salvation!
