Prog metal...where do I start?

Am I the only one who thinks that perhaps he was joking? :eyebrow:

Reading this thread, I find that most anyone that doesn't like Dream Theater absolutely refuses to believe that there's anything good about them. Even if they did write songs just to solo, I wouldn't give a #$!%; I like listening to it and find it very expressive (even if I'm not impressed by the lyrical content). I don't listen to it 'cause it's hard to play; I listen 'cause I enjoy it.

If you don't like it, you don't have to listen to it... or bash it, either. :hmm:

By the way, I whole-heartedly reccommend Dream Theater! :hyper:

I don't want this thread to turn into a Dream Theater debate thread, but... :) I listened to clips from a few Dream Theater albums this weekend an here are my thoughts. Granted I didn't listen to any complete albums but some of it I liked alot...and some of it i found unbearably cheesey (IMO-not trying to bash them) . Their skill is undeniable though, just not really my "thing" so-to-speak. I checked out 3 albums mentioned earlier in this thread.

"Images and Words" was the first one I listened to and I didn't like it for the most part. There were parts I thought were pretty cool, but it sounded the cheesiest of the bunch.

"Scenes from a Memory" was actually very impressive. This album had a heavier feel to it which I was digging. Still there was cheese parts I heard that really turned me off. I think I'll buy this album eventually cause the good parts I heard were really good.

"Train of Thought" was the heaviest of the 3. Again, some really fantastic stuff and some parts I wasn't too keen on. Overall though I think I liked this one the best. Maybe because It was the most agressive sounding of the 3. Still I wasn't completely compelled to buy it...but probably will eventually.

I did like this enough to buy though:

Everygrey - Recreation Day This band sounds kinda like a prog version of In Flames to me. They have that Swedish melodic metal thing going on, with a bit of power metal and some prog elements. Good vocals that are not overly-cheesey. Definitely want to check out more of their stuff.

FWIW, I'm finding I'm more into the bands that are prog in terms of songwriting, combined with technicallity...but not "show-off" bands if that makes any sense. I also like the heavier sounding bands in the prog metal genre.

If you like DT with a bit more atmosphere and less cheese, check out Office of Strategic Influence. It's Kevin Moore (old DT keyboardist) at the helm, who generally has put out some really good stuff since he left the band. I like it.

Ion Dissonance is worth checking out if you are into some skull crushing stuff.

Frederik Thordendal put out a solo album that is pure metal concept album strangeness. Think Meshuggah mixed with Silver Surfer comic books.

I've been listening to a lot of King Crimson and Athiest latley, but they've both been mentioned a couple of times already. Mastodon are another fairly progressive group that you might want to check out if you haven't already.

Whats with the people recommending Opeth? Read the original post damnit.

Here's a question, any prog metal bands out of Chicago? I've been hunting for prog metal musicians, and the only guys I find think progressive means hardcore x1000 with a part time keyboard player.


...what I hate about some scenes in America and around the world, everyone's looking to sell, sell, sell. :rollno:

I love Mastodon...they're one of my favorite bands. They get lumped in the stoner genre for whatever reason...but they really are a progressive metal band IMO. Concept album and all.

Athiest is fantastic...Are their other albums as good as "Elements"??

I just ordered a few more albums from the relapse store. They have a good selection of obscure metal. Here's what I got...reviews to come:

Alchemist - Austral Alien
