Among many purchases, I picked up Athiest's "Unquestionable Presence" & "Somewhere in Time" albums recently. What a fantastic band! I'm glad Relapse records has reissued these albums under their "Relapse Cult Classic" moniker.
Athiest - Unquestionable Presence: has been getting the most listening between the two. Athiest definitely has their own sound. They sound somewhere between Cynic, Death and Sadus to me. All tremedously great bands. The whole album rocks my fav songs are "Unquestionable Presence", "The Psychic Saw" and "Enthralled in Essence." I learned alot about the band, since the booklet provides a nice band bio and history. I was also saddened to read the tragic story about the death of their original bass player Roger Patterson on tour.
That was so sad. He was an unbelieveable player! Holy chops! You know he was insanely good since the only capable replacement was Tony Choy. I thought its was great how they included demo cuts and rythm tracks with him playing in addition to the full length. I haven't listened to the other album enought to give a quality review...maybe in a week or so.
