Prog metal...where do I start?

anyone heard the meads of asphodel? they're a british band on supernal records, and they do an absolutely insane mix of progressive black metal and.... well, everything bar the kitchen sink, really, but the middle eastern influences are the most obvious.

also cubic space division's self titled album is quite neat.
+1 whoever said devin townsend... what a guy.

figured i'd give this thread a bump...might be interesting to the DT alternative thread.

Anyways, I was listening to Cynic's "Focus" this morning...holy moly what an album. I was blown away years ago when I first heard it, and am still blown away now. I can't believe its almost 12yrs old. :eek: Still sounds ahead of its time by today's standards. :bassist:

Cool. I heard some mp3s from Neuraxis on willowtip record's website which sounded really good. I'll have to check them out...I'm more into the progressive tech/death stuff.

Has anyone heard this band? I just discovered them and I'm blown away! I picked up "Manic Impressions" and "Screams and Whispers" the other day. I posted mini reviews in the Recent Puchases thread. They sound like Athiest, Cynic, Death and Voivod with clean haunting vocals. If your a fan of any of these bands - you need to check out Anacrusis (if you havent already).

BTW, thanks to everyone's suggestions in this thread I have dicovered a bunch of amazing music. I've also discovered a bunch of music that I'm not so keen on...but hey to each his own.

hmmmm i'm pretty sure theres been one of their albums sitting in the second hand section of a local record shop for moooooooonths. maybe ill go check it out...

I would have to agree that DT is not progMETAL. They are more old-school-ish prog and I agree that they are kind of contrived. Since a lot of posters are recommending DT, you may want to check out the kings of progROCK...Yes. They aren't metal, but they absulutely define the genre. If you want their more heavy stuff, I would think "Relayer" might be a good choice followed by "Close To The Edge". I would also check out some old Genesis. Maybe "Live" followed by "Foxtrot".

I don't know about the rest of you, but I learned about a whole lot of great music from this thread and feel that there is more music from this genre coming out lately that we may be missing...here are two of my recent picks:

The Human Abstract (prog metal with neo-classical elements...I've been digging this a lot!)
- Nocturne

Artension (more neo-classical prog metal...this time with Steve Digiorgio on bass)
- Future World

What prog metal have the rest of you been listening to lately? :bassist:

Dream theater are up there with the kings of prog metal, echoing previous suggestions, scenes from memory, epic concept album. Images and words very "dates" classic DT, more melodic. Train of Thought, their heavy masterpiece. I'd recommend Awake, proper late 80's prog metal amazing musicianship especially for bass throughout the songs, just immense, check it out:bassist:

I totally agree that Dream Theater is a group with amazing musicianship. I own "Scenes From A Memory" and "Train of Thought"...I like "Scenes", and I actually listened to it again the other day, and though "Train" is heavier, as I said earlier in this thread, I feel there is too much musical m@sturbation going on on the album for me to enjoy it or listen to it again any time soon. I respect their talent, but I can't say, IMO, that Dream Theater (other than "Scenes" and a couple of other songs from earlier albums) is amazingly listenable (if that's a word...which it isn't) to me.

Dominici!!! (I give these guys three exclamation points, because they rock!)

Hmmm...I will have to check out Dominici, Paradise Lost, and Ensiferum...any particular albums that you'd recommend?

I have albums by all the others and I have to agree, Mastodon friggin rules!!!!

I have "Images and Words", and love the two FM hits, but the rest is pretty mellow. So "Train of Thought" is considered the hardest rocker/metal of all of them?
