I play in a band with a nice drummer but we're not sure he will stay with us due to work issues that will make him change his living location (2 hours by car). So, even if he says he will come back every friday and that it will not change our rehearsals/gigs plans, I'm not very confident in how long it will work with him.
And as I live in a place where it will be hard (not impossible but not easy, and so a bit long) to find someone to take his place, I'm thinking of handling the situation during the changing time by using programable drums.
We already do some rehearsals with them when our drummer is not available but never played live like that.
Today I use a cheap solution with the Hydrogen software. I found a free drumkit on Analogue Drums which is useful to get some more real drums tones.
I use that in a very simple way : I program each song and then plug my laptop to the PA and we're done for the rehearsal.
However I have some problems :
- I don't find Hydrogen very convenient when I want to program complex songs. It's not possible to have a full view of all the patterns when there are a lot and that can make the copy/paste operations a bit difficult. I mean Hydrogen let me program waht I want but not in the most simple way.
- the Big Mono sound file is nice but not as pucnhy as most of our songs require
- I don't know how to handle the live using of this kind of software : I don't see me clicking on my computer between each song during a gig.
So, are there more convenient softwares to program drums ? For example I would like to have a feature that let me combine a few patterns during a few bar, and be able able to group or merge them in a new pattern which would be called "chorus" instead of reprogramming the chorus sequence 3 times.
I'm looking for a software on the cheap side, if it's possible.
What are good sound librairies for modern rock ?
And finally what are the tricks for live use or programable drums ?
What is the best way to play the different recorded songs without being sticked to my computer between each song ?
And just for information, I don't own Apple devices so I'm looking for some Windows friendly solutions.
