Double Bass prophylactic patch

That's what happens though, every time a sound post patch is installed after a crack. No-one that I know has been disappointed with the sound of their bass after such a repair. But my sample size is not huge. And I think most luthiers would concur that there is little discernable change, if any. But there must be a bunch of people with opinions who HAVE had it done. We just have to find them!

... but yeah, even then it wouldn't be scientific ... but there is very little science in this field, really. (And if i'm unlucky, that comment is bound to re-start another lively discussion.)

Since virtually all the basses I had a hand in making at my former company had prophylactic sound patches installed as they were made, and they are played in fairly well known orchestras around the world, I feel safe in saying the patch does not hamper sound, and may in fact may reduce the possibility of a sound post trauma. But none off them were played with out.

perhaps the index for the appropriateness of a prophylactic sound post patch should be the number of dents in the bass caused by it's current owner, divided by the years of ownership over the price of he bass. or the klutz quotient.
