Protruding P-Bass Pickup Pole Pieces

image.jpeg
I went with the emg PAX set on my American fender P, however they are an active pick up. I didn't have to do any routing for the battery and no soldering required. It took longer to take the old ones out. They have been in the bass for almost 10 years and I really like the tone/ increased output.

Nice bass. What brand of flats are those?

Having pole pieces closer to the strings increases the output of the pickup.
Well, yes and no. Having only the poles closer to the strings increases the magnetic interaction and affects articulation more than anything else. Bringing the entire pickup, coil and all, closer is what increases output, as the strength of the magnetic field varies as the square of the distance from the string to the top of the pole.

Depending on how the pickups are built you can sometimes push the pole pieces flat against a hard surface. I've done this with a few. And I'm not responsible if anyone breaks their pickups. Just saying.

Most Fender pickups use a plastic bobbin and can have their magnets pressed in or out. If it's made with fiberboard and glue, then don't do this. The various ceramic Fender pickups can be easily converted to Alnico by popping the steel pieces out and replacing them with Alnico bar magnets. There are plenty of places to buy magnets of various sizes, like Addiction FX.
